The software Autocad is registered to Autodesk so I assume that Autodesk's engineers developed the program. It is basically jobs that were manually done in drafting and designing only this time it is a lot faster and more efficient. You start with the basics of drawing a line, then shapes, modify them and draw a 3d perspective which you can rotate and view from different angles. Finally you can render them with colors and objects or different materials to get a more realistic picture. The final output can also be polished in other graphics and photo-editing programs such as Photoshop or 3Dsmax.

Autocad is the industry standard 2D and 3D drawing software. Who wrote the program I don't know but it has been around a long time. It works on the vector principle. This means that each line has a starting co-ordinate and an end co-ordinate. Each co-ordinate has a value in the three planes - x horizontal; y vertical and z depth. Curves and circles are made up of lots of straight, but very short, lines. Once you have drawn an object in 'wire frame' mode you can instruct the software to view the object from a certain angle, tell it to hide all the lines that are hidden by the front of the object, then shade the surface into a solid and high light it from the side. Very clever bit of kit! Once the drawing is saved on the computer as a set of files, it can be scaled to suit and printed out. Sometimes a plotter is used to print out large drawings A0 size or bigger. I started working life as a draughtsman with pen and ink on linen or tracing paper with a drawing board, T square and set square. How things have changed!
