Do you loan out your favorite books?

Do you loan out your favorite books? I'm talking about the books that you keep on your bookshelf and won't get rid of (not a book you read once and then get rid of it). I don't loan out my books that often. I don't mean to be selfish but in the past, I've never gotten some books back, or they've been damaged in some way. If it's a book that I want to keep forever, then I don't want to loan it to anyone. If you don't want to loan out a book, how do you say no to someone who asks if they can borrow it without sounding mean?

ha ha I used to have no problem loaning out books. But then they stopped returning. That was when I stopped loaning out my books. But there are a few people that I will loan out my precious books to. Only because those people know how important my books are to me. Once, my mother borrow my favorite book. And because her dog tore it up, she went out and bought me a new one! I was really happy that she went that far to find the same book before returning it too me and telling me what happened. It made me trust her more with my books. :) Other than that, I do not like to loan my favorite books out to just anyone! They either do not come back or come back dog earred...and I just can't stand a book that gets folded down to mark your spot.

That's really nice that she did that! I wish everyone did... Anyone that has messed up my books don't even care. Of course I never let them borrow a book again.

I am reminded of the words of William shakesphere that " neither a borrower nor a lender be for loan oft looses both itself and friend" More than money it is applicable for books lent. somebody who is really interested in reading a book buy the book These borrowers are parasites who want to have things at theuir cost. Moreover they never erad the book and you never get the book back. I never lent my favourite books and say that is my policy. I allow them to comeand refer at home if they want to decide on buying the book . They have accepted this philosophy.

I always loan out my favorite books to friends. Even if I am going to read them again it isn't a big deal if I get them back. I tell them to take their time reading and if I get ready for the book I will ask for it back.

That is really nice of you, lol. I lost that willingness and that belief in the responsibilty of others several books ago. So, it is rare that I give out any of the books that I have collected, and even rarer that I give out my all-time favorites.

I lend books (and other things) if they return them. But I've also had occasions where people don't return them or they slightly damage them, not to the point where they have to be replaced, but damaged enough to upset me. A lot of people don't really respect other people's property! That bothers me a lot. I'm always super careful when I borrow something and I always return it. As for turning the request down, I don't know how, people will generally be upset with you. Just apologize and say that you can't?

This discussion could have been written by me. It sounds just like the problem that I have. But, I have learned how to not give out my favorite books anymore. And, the way that I go through with it, is by starting to give a long and detailed speech on what has happened to my previous favorite books. The ones that I lost and the number of them that are missing. And, even who was the last to have had it. They usually get the idea, that my books mean a lot to me and that I cannot part with them. There are some people however, that I do trust who feel the same way I do, so I am glad to give them books, and vice versa. Also, I am a fast reader, so I prefer to give my books to people who are also fast readers, that way they come back to me faster. The people who are slow readers are usually the ones that lose my books.

I agree. As a fast reader myself, it's horrible (to me) to lend a book to a slow reader as they have it longer and it's more likely to get damaged. I'm amazed at how careless some people can be with stuff that they borrow.

I used to loan out all of my books, but they would either come back all wrinkly and damaged, or not come back at all! So now I only loan them out to friends I know I can trust, those I know that take good care of their things. As for your question, it depends on how long you've known them and how much you know them. You can be honest with them and tell them how you feel cos of past experiences. If you feel comfy enough with the person, maybe ask to borrow something else from them in exchange? That way, you have some sort of collateral to make sure you get it back.

I used to loan out my books until I made the mistake of loaning my Stephen King books to my ex husband wife.Stephen King is my favourite author and I told my ex that his wife had better look after them.Well long story short,I never got them back and it really annoyed me because they were hard cover not paper backs.

I usually don't loan out my books either. I am afraid they'll damage my books. I am very careful with them and hardly break the binding on them. So nope...its a RARE very RARE thing if I loan one out.

I only lend them to one of my friends, who likes them as much as I do. If one of the books get damaged, I feel the need to go out and buy another copy of it.

I do lend out the books that I have, that is what they are ment for to be read. I don't have them to sit on the shelf and collect dust, until I pick it up again. Anyway, I don't really read books more then once, since there are still so many books out there that I have not read to this date.

I have loaned out a few of my favorite books in the past but don't loan them out anymore. I got all of them back except my favorite one. It was lost in a friends move and I will probably never see it again. Now if someone asks to borrow one of my books I tell them 'I am going to read it soon and want it to be here when I'm ready to read it, nothing personal.' It seems to work. If I am asked again by the same person, then I lend it to them, but only with the understanding that I need it back as soon as possible because it is one of my favorites and I read it often.

No, I don't as libraries have the service. Book loans are unheard of where I live. Anyway, I guess it is a good idea.

No,I usually don't give my favorite books as most of the people forget to return and I don't like to nag them to return I like if people are responsible to return then I don't mind to give to such people otherwise it is a burden to wait for them to return it sometimes torn or lost also in the bargain

I don't like to loan books out. In fact, I no longer do it. I have had too many either not come back or even worse, they would come back to me all righty, but they would be absolutely ruined with stinky odor, rips or tears, water or other liquid staining or some other problems. I think of my books as my friends and when they come back like that, it makes me cry. I know its "just" a book, a thing but I can't afford to replace a book if it gets ruined and I do re-read all of my favorite books regularly so I like to have copies of them. I even like to look at them on the shelf. That's why all of my favorite books are in my room.

yes I would definatley loan it out If they enjoyed it as much as I did I would not care if I get it back I would hope they passed it on for someone else to enjoy spreading the wonders of reading and the wonderful places and times it can take you to instead of sitting in front of a tv and the things you can learn you can always replace the book but the enjoyment some one recieves from reading the book you loaned or gave to them is the best and the descusions over the book you will have with them is great it will be something in commin you can share.

Yes I do but I ensure that the person borrowing them would take care of the books I have lent and would ofcourse return them to me. For instance I have many romance novels. I lend them to my friends and office mates and after they have read the books, we discuss what they think of the story. Sharing books and discussing them is one way of getting to know the poeople around you better. I also borrow books from my friends. However, if a person did not voluntarily return the book he/she borrowed, I never lend them a book again. Ever!
