Should parents get fined or jail time for spanking our own child?

I heard on the radio today that it may become California law that parents can get either fined or jail time for spanking their own child!!!! I don't mean abusing them, but even a swat on their bottom could land parents a fine!! What the heck is going on in this world!! What a can of worms that would open up...your thoughts?

No, a parent is legally responsible for their children and so long as they are not bashing their children they should be able to dicipline them if they can not then the law makers should take all responsibilities. I prefer not to see kids getting spanked but all kids are different and I have seen some pretty evil kids out there that nothing else would make a difference to them.
