Do you think having children in child care centres makes them obese?

My daughter and I discussed this last night - she recently returned to work and she has noticed that her 3 yo is no longer as physically active as he was when she was home. It never occurred to either of us that child care means being looked after in a house - no walks, no playing in the park, no swimming! She is also unnerved about the type of food they are getting there, while not "BAD" its not as nutritious as her food. What do other parents think of child care centers?

I have experienced working in several child care centers and I have seen nothing but good things. Great healthy meals, plenty of activity to keep their active and strong. If children are recieving 'bad' meals and aren't having enough time to be active, I'd make an inquiry about this center as I see something wrong with it. I'm sure others will too.

That's good, I hope she gets a good answer, or atleast convinces them they need better meals.

I think your daughter has her child is a bad child care center. I mean there are really good ones that feed the children well and have outdoor playgrounds and work hard to keep the children active. If you are taking your child to an individual who watches children in their home then I suggest doing more detailed research into the person you are leaving your child with. I loved the child care center that I had my duaghter in when she was younger. It was a great place with great people who did a great job of planning acitve activites as well as ones that were more subdued. I think in general it just takes a lot of research to find the right place.

I do think they are given lots of activities inside the center That is not the problem. the problem for us is that there are not that many child care places available and there are some where you have to book *before* the baby arrives! But yes I take your point about checking out a few more. Thanks!

although I feel that having a child in a care center could not solely lead to obesity I know that they are forced to somewhat restrict the children to one or two rooms as they have a number of children to watch after as opposed to a parent with 1 or 2 children, and as far as food goes they have to provide food that the majority of the children will eat, and lets face it with most families who both parents work full time the children learn to eat more chicken nuggets and french fries then home cooked veggies and such, also they child care providers go for quick and cheaper so Im sure they give the children alot of frozen foods such as corn dogs, pizza, hot dogs, ect, while none of these are actually considered healthy. I feel that this may be a factor in some obesity cases it takes more than just the child care to lead to obesity, it is also on the parents, as they should make sure to feed their children healthy meals at home, and make sure they are getting adequette excersize.

I think if your child is not getting walks and playing in the park and good, healthy, balanced meals and snacks, then you are not attending a good child care center. I have had my kids in child care centers here and there, but I am also a Certified Home daycare provider. You are paying a child care center or a provider to perform a job more important than any I can think of. The care given your child should be to your guidelines and specifications! If they are not, I would highly recommend finding another place or person to take your child to. Sorry for such a strong opinion, but I just get really mad about kids not getting the exercise, care and food they truly need.

Every childcare I worked with or had contact with has play time for the kids. The kids are not just in one room all day. They go outside and run around like 4 times a day and even do other group activites. Plus they have healthy foods. My daughter never gained weight in childcare, she actually gained weight when we stopped going to daycare. Is this a private/home daycare? If so, then that could be the reason. More at home daycares do slack in things like this. But daycares like La Petite, Childrens Place, Creative Kids and so on are awesome daycares and they have awesome activities. I would look into a new daycare and find one that has outside fun and other activities.

The kids are in a commercial day care centre not a private home. So far neither has gained weight but I feel it could easily happen.

My children back in Australia take their own meals to daycare as they do not provide food for them. There are various food services that can be used for parents that don't have the time to prepare but the food services have a strong focus on being healthy and nutritious. Maybe keeping the kids well fed keeps them more manageable? (apparently they follow a similar principle in prisons? lol) Another reason might be that her three year old is so worn out by the time he/she gets home that there is no more energy!

no, kids that are obese are feed at home. kids in the daycares are given goodhealthy mealsandin moderation. i knowbecausei worked in onefor many years. andi sawobese kids there but it was they came like that from the home. a home day care is goodbut like you said, if there is no physicall activitys then, they will get some weightandbecome lazy, when looking for a home day care, make sure they have space to run aroundoutside and inside. they go for walks and are doing activities to stimulate there mindsaswell as there bodies.

I am sure there are many good ones around unfortunately it has just come to our notice about the food not being the best and apparently they are not taken out for walks and the yard of the center is not very big.

I'd check into a "business" type of child care. Not one out of someone's home, where it's just another mom watching kids. I'm leery of those-though I'm sure there's good ones out there, I've just seen too many horror stories on the news kids falling out of windows, etc. I won't go with a home day care for my 1 year old, nor did I with my older 2. That's just my opinion. My 2 older daughters were in a school setting day care, and it was great. They're activites are planned out, certain times each class would go outside to play in the fenced play area, took field trips, lots of play time in the class room, learning time, they had reading time-my daughter used to read to the class when she was 2 lol, nap time, breakfast/lunch-can't remember how healthy they were, think for the most part they were though. I also like the school type setting better, because there's so many kids allowed for each adult. What happens at the home day care when the mom needs a break or something? At the school setting, they have so many other adults/teachers there to help supervise. My advise, check into one of those. May cost a little more, but my opinion was well worth it. For all you know, the kids at the home day care are just sitting watching cartoons in front of the tv-which would explain the weight gain...

I am lucky with my daughter's day care centre, They have a huge play area which the kids love. I supply her food so know she is having what she likes and is healthy. I have noticed she isnt the same energetic child she is on the days she doesnt go but know that is tiredness from day care. Good luck with it all

Personally I don't like child care centers. But I don't think they make children become obese. I just don't like them because they don't get the care and attention they get from their own mother. They usually do let them engage in plenty of physical activity, so they do get enough exercise. If your daughter feels he is not getting enough physical activity, she should discuss this with the center.

Here we have great child care centers. They do alot for the children here like having healthy snack times, and they also have indoor play equipment for those days that it's impossible to take them outside. With such a growing concern for child obesity, it horrifies me that more daycares/pre-schools aren't trying to fight with the rest of us.

I believe it would be quite the opposite in fact. Child care centres have to adhere to accreditation guidelines which means if they prepare the food most centres would follow the 'start right eat right' program, if you do a search I'm sure you will find out more about this. Children in child care centres are generally very active, have you ever seen 20 3 year olds together? they are very active and always on the go. I'm sure your grand daughter is just exhausted from the fun she has been having at her child care centre

Is that right - they have to adhere to that program WOW. The alarm bells rang for us when we saw them preparing tuna mornay with jars of "Chicken Tonight" plus "sausages" turned out to be Saveloys!!! Crikey! I hope its true about the exhaustion from the fun but somehow I doubt it. Thanks tho we will look into the accreditation rules

No Parents should not even think of leaving their children to their neighbour or relative.. Till the child are enough to handle the problem or matured to meet the situation

I don't think that makes a child obese because there are kids that still do those stuff and are obese. its the choices the kids make that affect them.

I have small daycare in my home and I would have to say that the opposite is true. Even on days we can't go outside or I don't have as many activities planned I coudn't make the kids sit in front of the TV all day if I tried. They LOVE to play with each other. We also have a nice playground in the back yard. My son reffers to it as "the park."

She should talk to the person providing the child care. Some care workers will do outings and make sure the kids get enough exercise, some just stick them in front of the tv all day. She has a right to ask for the kind of care her children receive. If not she should maybe look for another care provider.

My children never went to day care, I don't believe in it. I was under the impression that any federally regulated child care center (Head Start) has nutritional guidelines that have to be strictly followed in order to ensure proper nutrition. I also assumed that each state has it's own regulations that home-owned or private day cares have to follow. Since she recently returned to work, maybe her son is just going through an adjustmetn period since it is a new experience for him. If she is concerned about her son's physical activity level and health then she should quit her job and take care of her son, or find a day care center that supports her method of parenting to include physical activity and good nutrition.

Well not necessarily, if you tell your children whats healthy or not they will most probably listen to you. It's all in the way you tell them and teach them write from wrong.
