Why do want to keep a goody goody realtionship with superiors ?

Why do we want to keep our bosses happy and impressed even if at times it has to be against our principals or keeping up with those plastic smiles. Why are we afraid to tell our bosses straight forward on their faces that he is simply boring and talking out of his hat when he actually is ?
