Is internet chatting the new and easy way to meet friends?

I just noticed that most people nowadays use the internet to meet new people rather that talking to them first hand. Before, people used to go to social gatherings to meet new people, now they can sit at home and talk to almost anybody on the internet. Can you tell me what advantages you have talking to people over the internet than talking to them personally?

of course internet chatting is a new and easy way to find new and good friends.and we can meet new ppl on net by this we can know ppl from other countries and can share our thoughts with them.it can decrease the communication gap among them.
