Do you know which countries are the first in destroying it? I wonder if you know. Do you know why is it so thin for now? Do you know what will happen if the countries do not stop the airpollution? Tell me how do you or your country save the environment. Please do not paste articles from web. I wonder only your knowledge. I also wonder if the members of the 3 guilty countries what know all about it. Thank you.

The hole in the ozone layer was only discovered about 20 years ago, before that no-one knows how long the hole was there before it was discovered. There are also various different explanations put out for it happening in the first place, CFC's are one explanation, another not well publicised is that it could be caused by high flying aircraft. Air pollution is a problem, I agree, and even if the U.K. stopped all pollution instantly, with no greenhouse gases at all, this would be replaced by the increase from China in less than 1 year, India is also increasing pollution every year. Incidently did you know that methane given off from cows is 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2 given off from cars.

I heard that Kyoto protocol has not scientific basis, there are over 12000 scientists who say that. I don't know if it's true or false, someone else heard it too?

I heard an interesting point on TV a while back. They said that in the weeks after the 9/11 attack, when a great deal of flights were grounded, weather records show strange happenings with temperatures etc. Apparently, the polution from planes is now 'dulling' the solar radiation we get from the sun. This is a form of poisonous replacement of the ozone layer. It makes me sad that powerful people actually think that the planet is in such a bad way that we need to keep polluting to retain stability. The government in the Uk is trying to get people to be more environmentally friendly, but it seems silly to me that they're telling everyone to recycle our rubbish, rather than telling industry to stop producing excess packaging etc.

From this point of view it seems nonsense. But lots of little steps can save the environment too. Everybody thinks that they can not do much, then who can?

One the big countries it´s USA, they are anti Quioto, here in Portugal we are trying to do something with some eco measures, myself always recycle all my trash and try to spread the word that all of us have something to do to deal with this threat. But believe I post some discussions about this matter and comment at others like yours and it scares me the number of people that cares about.

I saw a few discussion about it, and I comented them, which were not too complicated :) Yes, I see the people do not care about this problem. In my country and in my city the people care about it more. I media we hear every day, which companies pollute the environment, and what new solutions come to save the ground, the water, the air and so on. For example the local buses here goes with enviromently gasoil. And there are transparents on the side of buses. And there are advirtising in tv also about this matter. And you are right: USA is among the 3. Thank you for your comment.

America and developed countries are contributing more for destroying the ozone layer. In our country in all industries government is forcing to install ESP system to reduce the pollution level. Even metro cities, diesel vehicles are being baned. Instead of that running vehicles with gas are given priority.

There is only one country worth mentioning here and that is USA. It produces at least 25 percent of all the pollution which makes it the worst by a long way! Yet there are many Americans who feel it is their destiny to rule the world by being the biggest fattest greediest and most powerful. To do this they have to make the most effluent of all kinds. They do not care to cut back on their lifestyles to allow growth in other nations, they believe they are destined to dominate. There are many American who have no real concept of a world outside of the USA. I believe the time has come for the world to decide if USA is indeed going to dominate the world. It may be forced to destroy what it seeks to inherit.

The ozone layer, or ozonosphere layer (very rarely used term), is the part of the Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). "Relatively high" means a few parts per million - much higher than the concentrations in the lower atmosphere but still small compared to the main components of the atmosphere. It is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 15 km to 35 km above Earth's surface, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.[1] The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations which continues to operate today. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the total amount of ozone in a column overhead, is named in his honor

i am not sure, but i guess the poles are rather affected by this...i think they know this. of course, but still there are some countries not signing the Kyoto protocol...why?

because they do not want to lose money. They do not want to spend money for the future. they think it is wasting of money. ALREDY not only at the poles!

I believe Mexico City and Tokyo are among the top 5 most air polluted cities of the world? And that nordic countries (well, the poles at least for now) are the first ones starting to feel the differences within the weather? Anyway, I believe this is a very concerning problem but unfortunetly all measures taken to date aren't enough to convince majorities. It's up to us, as individuals to have the conscience that if we don't change our attitude it will be our next generations suffering the consequences of our carelessness. Best advice I can give is that, if you think you are saving the environment try to spread word of mouth to all of those surrounding you and at least a little part of the issue will change.
