Are we really living in democratic nations? Is there any difference, after all? Do we have any right in the governance? I guess we are cheated most of the times.

You can clad politics and goverments in any name - nothing will ever be perfect for the man on the street. The world is ruled by a few men/organizations with all the money and power and the rest of us is and will stay slaves of the society. You can cheat yourself in believing you have certain rights and a good life, but just you try to step out of the boundaries implemented by your goverment/society or start advertizing a new radical idea that will better normal human lives but can undermine the powers above you and you will feel a ton of bricks coming down on your head. Money is power and that rules all. The higher up in the hierachy (politics/church) - more money, more power, more corruption. Once you have the power to make decisions about another persons life and you can force this person to comply with this - you are taking away his right to think and do for himself. We are all slaves with boundaries and we live, work, die in this little circle and can never be free. Keep someone on the breadline, force him to go to work so he can live and pay his car and house and schoolfees and keep the living costs going higher so you have to stay in your little circle and you have a good citizen, happy to be a slave without knowing it, because he do not have the time, energy and recourses to start thinking and set himself free.

i don't believe that we have an ideal democracy...i think most countries are plagued by oligarchy and whether the wolf is dressed as a communist, faschist, liberal or whatever else it is still a wolf..the creme at the top have the creme de la creme of the gdp.. i just don't understand when people on tv talk of gdp per capita when the 5% at the top earn more than the 20% at the bottom..could never get my head around that one..

i feel democracy is an illusion. Im with the British politition Tony Benn, who said if voting changed anything, they would abolish it. The financial interests are protected above all else, the will of the people can have have no influence upon this

Yes I believe I do live in a democratic country, because at least we have the right to vote. This means that if the government doesn't do what it says, or does something that the majority think is against the national interest, then they can be voted out at the next election. I believe we do have rights and if they are exercised properly, then we can have our say in things. For example during last year the New South Wales State Government decided to sell it's interest in the Snowy River Scheme and the Victorian State Government agreed to sell its as well. This meant it was up to the Federal Government as the major shareholder. Well, there was a huge public outcry about selling this Australian icon, and within a couple of weeks, the Federal Government announced it would not be sold. Now that is true people power, no violence at all just the people having their say in the matter. This would and would not happen in either a Socialist or a Communist country where the leaders would be the ones who would decide what happened. In fact in many of those types of countries, the people who were non-violently objecting would disappear somewhere for re-education. So it isn't an ideal world in a democracy but it surely does beat the alternative as far as I can see.

Yes..it is true that we are cheated most of the times even in democratic societies.. but consider the fact that in a fasict regime, the dictator does not even need to cheat us..he/she can commit attrocities blatantly without even caring about us. lets get to the interesting part. for some reason you had assumed that democracy is a pancea of all our problems..no ... its just one step towards a better place.. these systems will mature and we will find a better world.. but democracy is a good place to start with..isnt it?

That's a very interesting observation. I agree with you that democracy is just something to start with it, but I am disappointed with the democracy has failed us, even as a starting point, after so many years.

I'm living in a democratic for of government but it seems that our government is using her power in different ways. Massive cases of human righst violations are evident now in our country. No permit, no rally policy are implemented, she eset up rules that any government officials can exempt their self from any scrutinous queries of other government office, like Legislative office, She is monopolizing the whole government. I guess democracy is no longer as it is few years ago. You are extremly correct in saying that we are cheated by our own politicians as they only want what's best for themselves and not for the welfare of there constituents.

Thanks for that thoughtful, reflective respnose. I guess you have really understood what I meant. I am open to arguments in the opposite direction too, but just felt happy that we think almost the same on this topic. :)
