My mother passed away in July and I inhertied a beautiful fern from her. I know nothing about plans and now my fern seems to be dying a slow and painful death. It doesn't help that my cat sees it as her own personal salad bar too. Any advice on caring for ferns and how I can bring it back to life?

ferns are very delicate...and keeping any plants near your cat could invite him to chew on something poisonous..what i do for mine is to keep it in an easterly facing window, and you might try putting approx. 2 tbls. of epsom salt in the soil and water it in good..that's what i do with mine twice a year...i also take it and put it in the tub, gently soak it completely, and let it drain for a good while before putting it back up...i hope this helps, please let us know!

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I will try this. The fern is on a tall plant stand but my little darling jumps up and pulls down the branches. This is why I never had plants before but when we lost my mother I had to keep a part of her with me. She was quite the gardener but unfortunately I didn't get to learn.

You need to hand the fern to keep it from kitty and check out his website!! http://www.heatonsferns.com.au/fern_care.htm
That should help you and it might not be too late. Good luck!

Samsons on the right track. Ferns are a high moisture shade loving plant. Most windows would give it enough light. You might want to consider some fertalizer sticks and a mister. Ferns actually like to have their leaves moist. They thrive in areas like waterfalls and such where there's a lot of mist. A simple spray mister as well as a regular watering can would probably help a lot.

I'm going to suggest high moisture too, but not overwatering. Only water when the soil is dry to the touch, and keep a dish of water under/or around it with some rocks.. so it will evaporate and cause a little bit of humidity. I keep a spray bottle to mist mine every other day.. my cats also get misted when they can't stay away from the plant stand. Perhaps putting some stuff around your fern such as pictures or even keep a spray bottle may deter the cat a little bit. Good luck!

You can put it in a hanging pot and put it on your porch. It will do ok as long as it is shaded.
I will also suggest that you take it into the bathroom when you shower. This is the easiest way to provide ample humidity to an indoor plant.
The 2 prior responses also had some good advice that I will not repeat.
