Women--anyone heard of or had a uterine ablation?

Considering having an ablation because my periods are so heavy and cramping is awful. I'm 33, done having kids, so that's not an issue. The process involves buring off the uterine lining, which reduces and usually eliminates periods. It seems so extreme, but I just dread that time of the month. There is a birth control called Mirena that usually eliminates a period. It's an IUD that is inserted for a max of five years and then can be changed out for a new one. But my insurance doesn't cover it at all. But they'll cover the ablation. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this.
