Since you cannot tell the gender of lovebirds by looking at them, have you ever had yours DNA tested to find out what kind of pair you ahve? We are suppose to be getting ours done this week so we know if we have to be preapred to block any mating.

That's weird. I've never heard of that. I just thought that lovebirds were a matched pair that mated for life. And why would you have to block any mating? I'm not sure I understand. Anyway...it sounds expensive.

If we have a male and female pair that are rleated, they shouldn't mate or if we just decide we don't want baby birds. Most lovebirds that are at pets shops are not sold as a male/female pair. They come from breeders that take in random lovebirds from breeding mills. None of them keep records on genders, siblings, etc. So you have to get all that tested if you want to know. We found a place that will do basic gender testing for $20 each. This is less than the well bird visit they each need at the avian vet ($50 each). Compared to our cats, these birds are much more expensive to maintain as far as yearly checkups.

I haven't had experience taking care of lovebirds but they are so wonderful that if I do have a chance I would like to have a pet like those. If it's possible to have a DNA testing to those lovebirds and see if they are really compatible, why not? It would be great if they are really a pair in every aspects. Please give me a pair if they already have chicks, lol, just joking! Goodluck, sedel, hope they could be a perfect match! :)
