When are you truly "on vacation" or "on holiday"?

For me to be truly "on vacation" or "on holiday," I want to feel a little bit pampered. I like not having to make the bed every day and being able to eat out rather than cooking. Vacations are freedom from schedules... doing what you want, when you want, going to a movie in the middle of the afternoon or taking a walk on the beach at midnight. For example, I have a hard time considering camping as a vacation. As much as it's a lot of fun, I consider it more of an "activity" than a "holiday" because I still have to cook and keep things tidy and do many of the same things I'd be doing at home. There's no one that takes over the day to day tasks.
When do you feel that you're truly on vacation or holiday? Does it require room service or do you just need to be physically away from the house?

I need to be physically away from the house to feel that I´m on holiday. It doesn´t have to be a trip abroad, although I really like them. I just need a change of scenery. That´s really important to me.
Camping has never been my cup of tea, because of the domestic work that has to be done. I also don´t like the lack of space of a caravan.
I definately prefer room service.

Space is definitely a consideration! I remember being crammed into one during a camping trip and somehow, during the night, I fell off the bed in the "tent" section (it was one of those "pop up" styles) and hit the ground LOL! I opened the door and walked back in and my dad woke up, asking where on earth I had come from!! I'll take room service too, when possible! :)

To me, being on vacation doesn't even have to mean travelling. It just means time off to relax and do things that I truly want to do that I might not be able to do if i were working an 8 hour or more day in a job. I agree with you about camping and such things being more of activities than vacations, as well. You aren't really relaxing on a camping trip! *laugh* So in a way, that is not a true 'vacation'.

Good point, shywolf... I love it in the summer, when the kids are off school, because I don't have to make their lunches for a few months LOL Well, at least not first thing in the morning! It feels like a mini-vacation in itself!

I think most mothers feel that way. Many when they go on "vacation" will go to a cottage or something, still do the cooking, dishes, etc. Cleaning up is still needed. It's FAR from a vacation. IF you're lucky enough to have a spouse who will help, it can be enjoyful but to be honest... unless you can go and do your own thing, not chase after everyone else and continue to be the maid I think it's tough for a mom to be fully "on vacation".
