What is the biggest Do-It-Yourself project you have done on your home?

We pretty much redid our whole kitchen ourselves. Replaced some drywall, removed a brick chimney, rearranged the cabinet layout and installed recycled and painted cabinets, moved the location of the sink and added new faucets, tiled the countertops and backsplash, plus made a pass-thru bar into our living room. Once we put in the vinyl floor and new ceiling tiles, we will be completely done. What is the biggest project you have taken on? Who, if anyone, helped you? In the end were you glad you did it or would you hire a professional next time?

at this point our entire house is one big do-it-yourself project, and it's ongoing. We just bought it two years ago, and the people we bought it from were clever, but they did a lot of things only half. So, now we're trying to pull some money together to start over and make it our home. We were watching one of those DIY networks on tele last Saturday and we've decided we like that rugged country look, so I think we're going to go all out and do it over like that.

Wow, that sounds a lot like us! Someone had done a cheap flip on it in the past and done a lot of half-a**ed cosmetic fixes that we ended up having to tear out to really fix things properly. We bought ours 2 1/2 years ago and have already redone the bathroom (new drywall, sink, vinyl, restored the footed tub, etc), re-finished the ceilings upstairs, rewired and insulated the attic, totally redid the kitchen and have painted lots of walls. We have saved a ton of money by doing most of it ourselves (pros rewired the attic). It takes longer, and is a bit of a mess sometimes, but I could easily be paying someone by the hour for exactly the same results, so I'm happy to put up with the inconvienience. :-)

Okay, I'm starting to think the same people renovated both our houses at one time. Every single room except the kitchen and bath in our house had cheap paneling put up over the plaster walls, too! We opted to paint over most of it, though, and it came out quite good.

I imagine there's an immense sense of self-satisfaction every time you sink into your bathtub in the room you created from your own tastes. I'm hoping that we can get started this summer. The previous owners put up paneling everywhere instead of drywall, so we're either going to fix their crazy panel job so we can paint and wall paper over it, or tear it down and put up drywall. My husband is opting toward the first one since he works with drywall all day at his job.

The biggest do it yourself project I have ever done is paint my whole house myself! I did it in a month or so. My painting work can not compare to what you have done in your house, you have done a great job! I can not do the same because that requires a lot of knowledge and experience heh? If I had to do that I would have hired a professional because there is no way I can do it myself. Good luck and keep the great work!

Painting the outside of my house is something I don't really want to do, because I have a two story house and I am afraid of heights! ;-) Thanks for your response.

You have been busy! We always do our own remodeling. I am wanting start painting in the spring. I want to paint all the walls. They are hospial white, boring, I want to paint them some fun colors. I have my paint for the living room. It is going to be beige colored but the rest of the rooms are going to be different. I also am going to be doing a stone walkway in the spring. We have a walkway from the kitchen to the garage but we never park our vehicles in the garage so I want to put a walkway from the back door and also the front door to the driveway.

I've helped with everything in renovating more thgen one house, from ripping out bathrooms and kitchens and starting from scratch to drywall, to rivetting and tarring roofs...I think the worst was insulating an attic where the crawl space was less then waste high. It was a miserable ordeal!

It seems taht everyone always decides to insulate their attics in hot weather, too, doesn't it? I've finally decided not to do work in my attic if it is more than 60F outside, because it is just too miserable!

We just waxed our deck by ourselves. However it is completely failed. Deck looks worse. There is no doubt we are going to hire professional to some home project. The next plan we are going to have is to get rid of old carpet in family room.

Oh, that's too bad about the deck! I guess that's the risk of DIY, I'm aware of that possibility every time we start a new project, that we might have to hire a pro to finish it. Hope the carpet goes better.

I don't think that I've ever done anything that ambitious! Congrats! It sounds like you got a lot done. I'll bet you feel so much more at home. Once I painted my master bedroom mauve pink. My spouse didn't mind cause it was fun for me. He thought it was a nice color.

i am always paint and changing something. but the biggest was we ripped out all the old plaster walls and ceiling in my sons room and put up all new sheet rock. now that was a project as it was just me and my husband. i had to hold the 50 pound sheets up in the air while he screwed them in. Am i buff now? Nooooooooooo. :0

We added a family room to our old house and my husband laid tile. He can do anything so we would do it ourselves he was a tradesman for many years!
