Engine Rebuild

Any body work on car engines? I need some help re-alining the distrubuter. I tried following the instructions in the Chiltons manual for a 1998 Chevy Suburban for the 5.7L engine and it won't run right. I did not have the timing chain out so I know that part is still OK. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for installing?
