I'm not much of a believer in simple platitudes like these (no offense to Aesop). Life isn't that cut and dried. It depends on what the race is. If you're trying to write a computer program, you should probably go slow and steady. If you see a drowning child, hopefully, you'd be a bit more hare-like.
