ok, i just got a rhodesian ridgeback/lab mix. i have never seen a ridgeback before. from what the lady who was giving the puppies away said, this little guy, named squirt, is going to be probably around 50 lbs. now, right now he is small, but i'll be d@mned if he ain't the bravest, fiercest little thing i ever saw. any tips on training him? for example, to go to the bathroom outside? to listen to me, you know, basic commands, such as sit, heel, stay, etc etc. someone give me some pointers please!!

You have 2 pretty intelligent dog mixes there so he should be good. I have a Ridgeback and he's extremely intelligent. We were quite surprised at how quickly he picked things up, he knows what he's allowed and not allowed to do. He goes out the front of our house but he knows he's not to go on the road or beyond our property boundaries. He could be chasing the kids or a ball or a cat and as soon as it goes onto the road, he just comes to a halt and just watches, he wont step beyond his boundaries. We did take him to dog obedience classes for about 6 months, then we stopped (because we just couldn't be bothered), he did really well there though, but he learnt a lot at home. He's great to take for walks, he doesn't pull or anything. Obedience classes could be good, even if just for a short time to get the basics. Really all we did though was scold him when he did wrong, he doesn't like being told off and he soon learned what he couldn't do. Make sure you let him know your boss. Always feed him after you have eaten, its good too to make him sit, then put his food in his bowl and don't let him have it until you say he can. It only took a couple of times for our dog to know what we meant and now he does it every day, he sits and stares at us until we say 'good boy', then he'll eat. Fierceness - hmmm perhaps thats a lab trait, ours is a big wuss, he's scared of loud noises, absolutely terrified of them.
