Are air purifiers a joke?

I read an article in Consumer Reports that said the Ion ones were a joke. I want one for the baby's room.

I know they work; I have breathing issues and had to get one. I was sceptical at first, but once I had a full day of it, I noticed a vast difference in the air quality and my breathing improved vastly.
