A discussion is more of a multilateral forum where we are seeking information and opinion. We want to involve as many people and as many thoughts, but we find more discussions already in place seeking opinion, than what we can originate ourselves. SO you would end up responding to more discussions rather than generating new discussions.
That's my opinion and idea, I would rather go for answering a already set up discussion rather than starting a new discussion on the same topic.

i don't always start my own discussion. i only post my discussions when i want to know something through the help of the members, or post some of my unforgettable experiences, or post some of my life's lessons.
i most of the time post one or more discussions per day. the rest, i reponse to others'.

I do start a thread once in a while but I'm more on posting to other user's discussion as I have noticed I earn more from that, rather than starting my own thread.
The same as you, I only get a few response to discussions I start so why not just post to other threads right?
I really feel frustrated though when I start a thread and I get no or very few response and somebody starts a thread similar to what you have and they get more response. Anyway, that's life.

Yes, I concentrate on replying.
I am finding it difficult to find a subject that is not been submitted recently.
