Why do you smoke/drink ?

Well i never smoke, never drank in my life. I always thought that a moments diversion through smoking, drinking may amuse you for a while but they change nothing. But I'm curious to know why people smoke or drink ? They do know that it surely kills them slowly? why do they continue it knowing where it leads.?
