I just saw an accident down the road from my house, this guy was staring at what was either a cell phone or an iPod and got broad sided by running a stop sign, I am surprised that I did not get hit as I was on the corner when he tryed to blow through. I know that a lot of places have outlawed the use of cell phones while driving but do we have to make a law about iPods as well? Seriously why would you not pay attention while you are driving?!? This is just stupidity! Two plus tons of steel under your control and that cannot get the respect of undivided attention?!? What the bloody hell is wrong with people? Hell when I was able to drive (disability) I always paid attention to what I was doing, yeah I had a lead foot but still I paid attention. So tell mee what do you think?!?

We have a law here (Ireland) that states you shouldn't use your mobile phone while driving. Well, I'm sorry to say, but even the gardai are using their phones while driving. I was walking along last week when a squad car passed me with the garda in it holding his phone up to his ear and having a good oul' chat. People can do incredibly stupid things while they're driving and all it takes is 2 seconds and someone might walk out in front of you and you won't have a hope of seeing them.

Glad to hear that you escaped getting hit. Yes I believe there needs to be laws against using anything in a car other than the neccessities needed to drive. I have actually seen some drivers watching tv in their cars. How on earth can they concentrate on driving with so many distractions. I don't even like to have the radio on in my car in case I don't hear an ambulance coming up behind me. Some people will just never learn.

i totally agree with you... people should be responsible when they are driving because it is their own lives and other people's lives that they put at risk... i hate people who drink and drive as well... so many accidents happen just because of this stupidity... they should have known better... i think the law should make a more severe punishment for these people such as putting them to jail for a long period of time or banished them from driving forever... these people are just impossible and they should not be allowed to drive at all...

Wow!!! I am so sorry you or anyone else could have been hit! I am glad to hear that you are okay!!!! Yes, it irritates me when people have to play with their grown up hand held toys. I have pulled over many of times when I have been on the cell phone because I know that I can not give my full attention to driving. I didn't know though that some states outlawed cell phone use while driving. Which states? I would think Florida might be one of them because just before we moved, there was a serious issue about a woman hitting a child and killing the child because she was on a cell phone and ran a red light. I would have hated to be the driver or the mom. I don't think I could live with myself if I lost a child or was the cause of the loss!

California just passed a law for the new year (2007) which stipulates the use of a hands-free device when using a mobile phone in a moving vehicle. However, I am not overly pleased that this will not take effect until July 2008, about 1.5 years away. This is to ensure everyone has an opportunity to obtain the necessary devices to provide hands-free communications. I have witnessed too often the effects of inattentive driving while on the phone: wandering within a traffic lane, reduced speeds (which is dangerous when the flow of traffic around the abuser is much faster), sudden stops and crossing over into adjacent lanes. This irks me even more since I am most often on a motorcycle where I am not on a cellphone, eating, reading a book, shaving, etc., but can fall victim to someone in their steel cocoon who would abuse the privilege of driving. Motorcycling becomes dangerous because of the idiots on the road (and of course, the idiots who hot dog on bikes too). I would not mind banning mobile phone while driving altogether!

I think that you are right, however I am guilty of being distracted as well. Kids arguing in the back, phone ringing (even if I don't answer it it's still a distraction) and all the other things that can take away from driving. I'm so sorry for your experience. I know that must have been terrifying.

I think all people need to pay more attention when they are driving. It's not just the distraction of a cell phone, or IPOD. Kids, spouses, DOGS, or anything is also a distraction. I'm sorry but I think people driving around with freaking dogs bouncing around on their laps is A LOT more distracting than using a cell phone! Some people just have no freaking brains, that's the problem!

I think that both are just as diistracting weather man, beast, or electronic. Distraction is distraction. Thank you for the post and have a great day!!

Yes I agree with your point that now a days the drivers are idiots and ipod and cell phones are their toys. People now a days can do anything for listening music and having a talk with anyone even when they are driving they can mortgage their lives for these things.

A couple minutes of undivided attention or a lifetime of regret? The makes the decisions easier, and I have to agree to that, a ban hasn't been made in our country yet so there are still lots of this happening, really stupid though if they choose the first choice (above) as their decision

I always use my ear phones for my cell phone when I am driving. And even then, I try not to get into long discussions because while my hands are not busy holding my phone, my brain is distracted from my driving at times if I am in a serious phone call. If I need to accept or make a call while driving that may keep my mind off of my driving, I pull over or find a parking lot to sit in. And as far as ipods go, it will be hard to ban their use as it is no different than reaching over to your radio or cd player while driving and changing stations or discs. That one would be harder to ban or control.

Dateline NBC did a study with the hands free devices and they were just as distracting as the hand held devices. It is great that you take the responsibility that you do just be careful as the life you save may be your own. Thank you for the post and have a great day!!

Looking around before you play with the gadgets sounds like a good idea but you also have the wild card that must be instituted being "it just jumped out of nowhere". thank you for the post and have a great day!!

I agree when driving you should be concentrating on the road and nothing else. There will eventually be a law about ipods in cars but it will take acouple of deaths first before something is done about it.

thank god.. u r safe.. even i have seen many such cases.. though the traffic rules say that such things shudnt be done, there r hardly very few people who r really following them.. the rules shud be made more strict n even the people shud be made educated abt these happenings..

That is really sad :( can't people wait until they are doing something less vital than _driving_ to fiddle with things like Ipods? It sounds to me like a law should be passed, not only for IPods, but just for better and more responsible driving in general. I think that drivers shouldn't allow themselves to be distracted by any such devices. I mean, a year or so ago a lady on her cell phone came driving towards us in completely the wrong lane and going the wrong direction! That was freaky. She didn't come anywhere near us, but it was worrisome to see someone so engrossed in talking on their phone that they weren't even paying attentino to where they were driving.
