Would you spank out of love?

Some say you don't love you kids if you spare the rod. I personally don't like spanking children. But I guess it's right what they say, spare the rod and spoil the child. I think if you truly love your kids, you have to discipline them. Spanking is just one of those ways. What are other way you can suggest to discipline your kids?
