I have a friend who's asking me this question. He can't manage to pay his bill right now and the bank keeps on calling him. Then he received a letter from a collecting office stating that he must pay the bills or else the case will go to court. He's not running from the responsibility, but right now, he can't do anything about it. Can anyone help me answer this question?

they will take you to small claims court for the money. but since doing jail time wouldnt get them any money, im going to say no. besides that, small claims court judges cannot sentence jail time. (from what i understand)unless your held in comtempt.
i had this problem a while back. and the collection agencies can get quite harrassing and sound very threatening.
your friend should call the company and say that he isnt trying to run from the responsibility, but that his current financial situtation makes it impossible for him to pay what he owes and still be able to eat. ask if he can set up a small monthly installment pay method.
they should be willing since that way they would at least be getting some money.
also..make sure he tells them he wants the account frozen, so he doesnt keep earning interest on the amount he owes, and just getting further in debt.
hope that helps...

We'll you can tell your friend that he should learn from this lesson and stop using or I might say abusing credit cards/plstic money. Some even say it's "DEVIL'S MONEY" huh...eerie. On the other hand he can have free meals inside the jail. lol
