What do you think of the new TV show Ugly Betty?

I finally got to see the new fall show 'Ugly Betty'. I kind of liked it, Betty has a lot of mishaps, and bad luck here or there, but she is good spirited about it and always seems to handle it with a good attitude. Have you seen it yet? And what did you like, or dislike, about it?

I haven´t seen it yet, but that might be because it´s not broadcasted in my country yet. It sounds like a fun show, I will keep an eye out to see if it´s going to be broadcasted in the Netherlands too. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks, you really made my curious about it. Wondering if I'll be able to get a sneakpreview online. Do you know if the show has a website?

Ugly Betty is played by America Ferrera. The official Ugly Betty website is: http://www.bettysuarez.com/ You can watch part of the pilot here on the ABC tv site: http://abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index.html

I really enjoy Ugly Betty. I think she is an excellent role model. I know she isn't suppose to be pretty, but I wish they would get rid of her braces.

Yeah, I really enjoy the show too. Never thought about the role model angle, but thinking about it, I'd have to agree. She shows grace under pressure, the desire to do a good job, and ignores the nasty, hurtful comments from her co-workers. I know, those braces gotta go! I heard that this show was originally started in Mexico a few years back, and was a big hit down there. Thanks for writing!

Actually the original Ugly Betty started in the country of Colombia and it was called "Betty La Fea" which is translated into Ugly Betty. Then other countries started copying it because it was such a sensation in Colombia. I believe that even Italy has its own version. I believe that Betty is a heroine for many who feel that the world is discriminatory against the beauty-challenged. Here is a girl (who by the way, in real life she is a totaly cutie pie), who refuses to take no for an answer and is determined to move ahead regardless of the challenges thrown her way. I LOVE (with a capital L) Ugly Betty and cant wait till the episodes resume in January. In the meantime I have to get my Betty fix through their website. Thanks for the topic!

Thanks for letting me know it started in Columbia...I didn't know that! (I always thought it originated in Mexico.) Yes, I think she is a good role model. America Ferrara (spelling?) is really pretty in real life. Thanks for sharing...good info!

I think it's cute, but it's more of a chick flick type thing (I don't think guys would like it as well.) I like your dog picture! Thanks for writing!

I've seen it and it didn't really do much for me. It's cute but that's about all. I'll continue to watch just because now I want to know how it ends... but it seemed rather shallow and vapid.

It's not the best of programs out there, but it is cute. There's so many shallow shows out there anymore, with no real plots like they used to have.

I know what you mean about the remakes...they do that soooooo much anymore with everything from movies to tv shows. Enough already! Come up with something original!! Ugly Betty originated in Mexico, so most Americans haven't seen it and it is 'new' to us.

I lOVE that show..It is one of my favorites.....mainly because I'm a huge fan of Salma Hayeks and she's the show's executive producer. I think its a nice change of pace from what's out there on TV

I'm a Salma fan too, it's nice that she's making appearances here and there on the show. It IS a nice change of pace from the usual sit-coms, it's refreshing to see a main character actually have morals and trying so hard to do things right and fair. Thanks for your comments!

Rmuxagirl...My take on the basis of the show is that Betty is not beautiful by todays standards: she is no slave to fashion, she has good values (regarding family, money, others feelings), she follows the beat of her own drum (rather than being somebody she's not), and she is pure of heart, and honest to a fault. The show revolves around the fact that Betty gets a job in a high fashion magazine, and follows her adventures with people who are very shallow and revengeful, because THEY deem Betty ulgy because she is not a carbon copy of themselves. I like the show because Betty, despite all the things they are always doing to her to sabbotage her, always seems to make the right choices. It's one of those shows where you root for the underdog (Betty); I think lots of women can relate to some of the jealousy that other women put on them, and the clever way Betty ends up handling things.

Ugly Betty has become a must see show in my home. My husband and I love it. It's smart and funny with a mysterious factor to it. Great show if you ask me..better than some of the crap that's out there anymore.

Amen!! It kind of reminds me of shows from a long time ago, where morals and kindness mattered. Sure beats the sit-coms where every kid is a little brat and they get rewarded for their bad behavior. At least Betty has some substance and soul to her being, something a lot of people can relate to. Thanks for writing!

You know, I never really thought about how you get your tv up there. I'm assuming you get sattelite reception only? Actually, it's a pretty good show (well, I think so anyways, lol) Thanks for replying!

We have a lot of Icelandic tv stations and then a lot of people get satellite tv. Iceland is very technically advanced contrary to what most people think.

I'm learning more about Iceland today thanks to you Isasice! I never thought that you guys didn't have the latest technology, I just didn't think there'd be a lot of broadcasting stations because it's so remote from mass populations. I don't know why, but I assumed that everything would have to come in by sattelite as fm signal wouldn't go that far. (Hey...call me naive, lol!) I would love to be able to visit there someday! I've only ever 'visited' through online pictures and National Geographic, but there again, I only get to see the part of up there that they show us. Thanks for teaching me something new again today!

There is nohing wrong with ugly Betty. That's life of Betty portrayed only by someone to teach us a lesson and at the same time enjoy the show.

Good point neon! It reminds me of shows that used to be on, where morals and honesty still counted more. Betty always tries to choose the 'right' thing to do. So many TV shows anymore do not do that and give kids role models that we would never want our children to follow. Thanks for your input!

It was cute but I don't know how long they are going to be able to make it last. I think the show has a few too many caricatures. It's cute but a little shallow.
