you bet it does! specially when you just let it go and don't keep watch of what you eat. my mom's a mild diabetic and she's sure to take her medication every day. and she stays away from all kinds of sweets, be it a drink or food. when you're diabetic, sugar is a complete no-no. when you abuse it even if you're aware that you are diabetic, time will come when you'll have complications that would involve your heart and your eyesight and possibly, the other organs in your body. and yes, it's hereditary, meaning, it can be passed from generation to generation. so if your mom has it, chances are, you'll have it specially if you're not careful.

Well actually, you CAN have sugary food, in three situations A) You are having a hypo (blood sugar too low) B) You are about to do HEAVY exercise C) You have extra insulin (or medication) And yes there will be complications if you abuse it.

Diabetes can become deadly if one does not take proper care after being diagnosed with it. But, having said that it is not something to be scared of and does not effect normal life in any major way. One just needs to be a little careful on eating habits and has to start exercising. In my case it has in fact been an awakening for me as I have become very particular about my health now and have taken to regular exercising, which I used to avoid earlier due to work pressures. While one may get it due to hereditary reasons, one has to be careful to avoid high fat / carb foods and too much of sugar as too much these things definitely increase your chances of getting diabetes.

Diabetes is deadly if you allow it to progress, that is you don't watch that you eat and not taking your medications. It will transform your eating lifestyle. Prevention I believe is only changing your eating habits. Be conscious with what you eat and try to exercise to burn those fats and excess sugar. Will it affect your normal life? Yes but you can adjust to it and accept your new lifestyle to be your normal and you could live long as diabetic. Do you have to worry? i guess the more you worry about the disease the more you get worse. thinking positive that you can lived through it would help.
