I have been married for 30 years. The number 1 secret in my book of a successful marriage is communication. What are other things that make for a successful marriage?

I think compromise is another important aspect of a good relationship. We can't continue to live as single people and not consider each others feelings or wants, or those of our children. Sometimes things we might want to do conflict with what the other wants to do, so in this situation we learn to compromise and deal effectively with the little hurdles that life throws up in front of us.

I agree that compromise is important. Without compromise one person is dominant and the other is submissive. Compromise I believe helps solve problems in an agreeable way.

I agree that communication is key. Also honesty. Don't lie to each other, even if it's to keep from hurting the others' feelings. Honesty is truly the best policy because with it comes trust.

When I tell my wife what time I want to leave for a trip, it is usually 30 minutes earlier than when I really plan on leaving. That way we start off when I planned. My wife sleeps alot on trips so the only trouble I have with travelling together is starting the trip. Thanks for your comment
