Anemia (low red blood cells)is diagnosed with a simple blood test. If you do have anemia, you will probably need more blood tests to determine the cause. Low iron from what you eat or from blood loss can be determined through the blood, as can other nutritional deficiencies which prevent the absorption of iron. Depending on the results, you may need further testing (either blood or some Xrays), but generally 1-2 blood tests will provide the information needed to treat you. The majority of anemias are simple iron deficiency anemias. This is common in women who are losing blood monthly through heavy menstruation. An iron supplement will usually help.

Anemia can be detected by a simple blood test. Most causes can be diagnosed by analysis of blood samples and by examination of the blood cells under a microscope. A complete blood count test is always performed. The red blood cells and their iron-bearing protein, hemoglobin, are measured. Iron deficiency anemia is suspected when the red cells are low in number and unusually small. Measuring the amount of iron and its associated proteins in the blood can confirm this diagnosis. Those with vitamin deficiency anemias have larger-than-normal red blood cells.
