"Unanswered Prayers"

My daughter and I were going through some songs on my computer this past weekend. I have a small number of country songs, in and amongst all the other genres that I listen to and she asked about a Garth Brooks song. It's called "Unanswered Prayers." Don't know if you know it but, if you don't, the point of the song is that a guy and his wife go to a hometown football game and they run into his old high school flame (gosh I'm singing in my head as I type LOL). Anyway, he remembers that, in high school, he prayed and prayed for "God to make her mine." It didn't happen and, as they talk, he sees that what he thought was true love, and what he wanted so bad, wasn't meant to be at all. He realizes how happy he is with his wife and "the gifts" he has been given. He comes to the conclusion that "some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers." Did you ever wish, hope or pray for something so strongly and you didn't get it -- only to realize later on that it was for the best and you didn't really want it (or weren't meant to have it) in the first place? Do you have the gift of an unanswered prayer?

My husband ... the greatest answer to prayer ever! - This man loves me with all his heart and desires the very best for me! He makes me laugh and keeps me on my toes.
This song could be my life motto! I dated a guy on and off for 5 years ... he repeatedly broke up with me for other girls and when they wouldn't fall for him he came back to me. He told me he loved me and I believed him for the most part. Later he told me that he just said that because he knew it's what I wanted to hear. It was heartbreaking letting him go. But now I'm happily married to a man who truly loves me, who desires only me, and who constantly tells me that no other woman has anything on me! We also have three of the most beautiful children that were ever born and that would have never happened if God would have answered my prayers that guy #1 would be mine. Praise God that I got my husband and not the other guy!

I know the song well. It's a really lovely sentiment. The truth is, even when i have a prayer that seems to go unanswered, I know that it is truly not unanswered. If something I feel I need in my life doesn't happen, I know that it is because it is not meant to happen, or because I am not yet ready for it. So I have a lot of unanswered prayers that I am thankful for, it is just the the examples of such things in my life can be a tad bit hard to explain.

It may be hard to give a specific example but your answer is so clear. I love what you've said here, shywolf... sometimes, being unanswered IS the answer in itself and the only one we ever need! :)

I think we all have begged God for something that WE felt was an absolute NEED in our life and never got it. There is a reason for sure, sometimes we find out.. other times we never quite realize.

Yes, I did this on a regular basis when I was a teenager. I would normally share my experience but this is sorta personal. I am thankful that God does not give us all we pray for.

I know so well what you are saying, villageanne... especially regarding the teenage years. Oh how we change, based on our life experiences! I'm trying hard to get through to my 16 year old daughter about this very subject these days.
