How people in mylot get rated..... can you make me wiser

I really do not understand how a discussion or a comment get rated. Does the rating starts after posting certain numbers of posts?. Some time i see for some of the comments/responses there is that rating meter i.e the + or - sign through by which the responses are given the rating. I have posted about forty post yet i have not seen any signs by the side of my posts.But i have noticed these signs for some one who have posted very less number of posts.Hence iwant a clarification in this matter. Can you help me.......

Users can rate your discussions/comments with a + or -, or not at all. YOu can do the same to theirs. This determines what your 'star' ranking will be; you have to have 100 points before your star ranking shows up.

Please tell me some thing about the points. How do i know that i have got 100 points. What is the measure by which points are awarded.
