Why do most people refuse to intervene when they see someone being bullied?

Well this incident occured as I was picking up my younger bro from gym and there I saw a boy maybe of 14-15 years old being slapped and kicked around by a bunch of some bullies or wannabe thugs. Well I watched in amazement as they slapped him and asked for his money, the little guy started sobbing and screaming "I don't have any" and then they snatched his cell and the boy wailed "That's my dad, please don't take that" But he got another kick. I had enough so I went in and well said "Mind your own business and leave him alone" The response was a shove and then I got mad and retaliated, they were three guys about my age and well soon a street fight broke out and then they eventually ran bloodied and bruised, I sustained a lower back pain and a lip bleed but thats nothing compared to what happened to them ... well as people started congratulating me ... I don't know what happened to me all of a sudden I screamed "You cowards! None of you had the guts to come to this boy's aid" and then I left. Got home, took a shower and then there is this thought on my mind "Why didn't anyone help out the kid ... why???"

i agree with the person above me! its because of FEAR and the notion that better him than me! its a dog eat dog world out there! no body gives a damn anymore! but you did the right thing by standing up for that kid! and the yelling in the end was justified!

Because they weren't willing to risk their own hides.
When I was younger I was the small kid, but I was unexpecidly explosive. Bullies would think I was an easy mark until they pushed me too far, then BOOM. After a while I developed a reputation and the bullies learned better. When I finally cought up sizewise I became the defender much like you did.
Most people just want to talk and criticize instead of actually taking any kind of action. Kudos to you for taking that step.

Thanks a lot man, I don't know why I just felt like defending the kid! I guess it just came out of me. But I still can't stop thinking what ... what if I wasn't there. What would had happened to the kid?

because of fear. it is a hard fact that because of bad stories we heard relating to such scenario, procedure suggested by police officer or expert on rules of engagement,..
