Emergency plan...

I had a long long talk with my 9 yr old daughter about locking the basement door. Her little brother sleepwalks so it has to be done.Well my son has autismn and is very literal and takes everything said at face value. He heard the whole thing. The fallowing day I ran downstairs to throw a load of laundry in for the umpteenth time and he closed the basement door and LOCKED IT! NEVER have I been so happy to have a cell phone on me. I called my hubby who came home to let me out! My son sat at the door singing while I kept sticking my fingers under the door.It really made me realise I have alot of emergency planning to do. Do you have any emergancy plan if something happened to you while you are alone?

I was getting on my mom about this last night she cant walk down the basements steps so she has driveway that goes around the house , she drives down to go to the basement when she needs something , she had her dog with and my mom is big woman , when she got ready to go get back in her car the dog knocked her down and she fell in a big water puddle , if she broken something I wouldn't of know till late that night I usually call about 8:00 and check on her in the evenings , so when she told me about this I told her to keep your cell phone on you that way you can reach me so I can come and help her , I think she learned a lesson about this now.

My son also sleepwalks. And when he does he always disapears out side, he has a weird facination with sleeping with the pets (his friends as he calls them). So we have to make sure all doors are completely bolted at night to make sure he doesnt wonder off, and if he has a sleep over we make sure the inviting person is completely aware of this. We live on a farm, in the middle of trees so we are in a high fire risk region, so therefore we have had to make a fire plan. We've made a 5 step fire plan, which includes all the alternative choices we have, like being able to leave in the car if not where to go on foot, if we cant get there then there are other alternatives. Weve made more than the usual plans as if there was a fire here Id have no phone service as non of the mobile carriers cover my area. We are fortunate enough to have water facilities here which the fire fighters need so we know exactly where to go so we can get out. There hasnt ever been a major fire here as everone is so careful, but some smaller ones started a few weeks back from lightning. They were put out within a few days, and its reminded us again Be Prepared for the worst.

It is really scarey when my son sleepwalks! We have hook locks on the top of doors that way he can't reach...you can't be too careful. He knows how to dial 911 in case of emergency. We also have a diaper bag type thing that I keep a change of clothes, water bottles, extra meds and sanitary items to grab incase of emergency.

Make sure that your children know where all of the emergency items are and make sure that they know where all of the important things are. Tell them to be mindful of what they have and to take pictures of everything and keep them in a safe place.

I have the same fear all the time when I go down to put clothes in the washer or dryer . I am so paranoid of being locked down there that I won't put laundry in unless someone else is home . The knob on our door is broke and I am scared if I go down right quick my little one will run off with the doorknob . She doesn't have autism she is just fascinated that the knob moves . I have often wondered what I would do if I got locked down there because my babies would be upstairs alone . I am sorry but I had to laugh when I read your story because I often joke about it around here about being locked in the basement because of the knob . And we can't change it because we rent this place and they like the knobs on the door because they are the old fashioned one's , the only thing is they are broke .

Hehe that means he is smart for some one with autism (I have a couple of friends with autism too so I know a bit).. anyways for emergency plan.. first I always have my mobile phone with me whenever I leave the house .. And I have speed dial on it to my family and also boyfriend.. so it makes it easier to reach them faster. But most important in an emergency situation is that to keep calm and collected.. otherwise you wont be able to do anything useful ...

No but you know what you really give me something to think about. My goodness I am glad you had a way out. I don't have a basement, but that doesn't mean something couldn't happen. Thanks for sharing that.

I have an emergency button on my wheelchair, which I pushed once when the chair came out of gear suddenly and no one was here with me. I sleep in bed with my cell phone. I don't have a real plan, though, per se. Maybe I should get one. Your post made me think. Good job!

Actually i have a similar story that relates to this! My oldest daughter is 5 and my baby is 2! My three oldest were outside playing and a magpie happened to fly into our porch. My baby was watching a movie and seemed rather content with it . So i slipped out the door so that i could make an opening so that the bird quit fly out before it hurt itself. My oldest was exremely fascinayed by the magpie she was so cute. Unfortunately her baby sister wasn't so cute. I went to go back in through our side door and ro my surprise it was locked. My two year old daughter locked me out of the house and she was in there all alone! I was terrified for her well being all alone in there and i felt lost thinking that she would never open it again. Fortunately she is smarter than i think at times because she opened after about the 10th attempt! I guess there is a God because i was praying the whole time! God Bless!!!

Whoa...how scarey!! I hear you on the praying..I kept praying that *A* would stay right there by my hand and sing to me. I kept asking him to sing "123 Like a Bird I sing" and he did! Definatly a blessing!

Ahhhh, if ever I were alone. No, I do not have an emergency plan. But your post made me really think about it. Maybe I should start to carry my cell with me. I have a pretty predictable life, and way too many people in and out of my house, so I am not sure if my emergency would last too long, but it is certainly something to think about. Good Post!

I think an emergency grab bag for you to grab while running out of the house would be a good thing....just in case!

Cell phones are one of the best inventions on the planet. They even saved my life(long story).Even I sleep walk and since I sleep on the second floor I could even fall down the stairs in the middle of the night. My family and I have a plan for dealing with robbers. They have robbed me once before.Right now if there are robbers, one member of the family will rush into the toilet with his/her cellphone and call thepolice, which are very responsive in my country.

OMG I'm sure in time you will laugh about this but at the time I'm sure you were in a panic. It's a good thing you had the cell phone with you. Not sure what you would have done otherwise. You might want to get a different style lock on that door or perhaps get it so that there is a key on both sides. I don't really think I have an emergency plan in case something like that happens or any other emergency when I'm alone. I'm not usually alone but our place isn't that big and it's only one floor so that helps cut down problems for when I am alone.

We have an emergency plan in place if we ever have a house fire or a tornado, but nothing like that. That is a very good point. Being a SAHM, I do not even have a cell phone, and after dropping my hubby off at the carpool place the other morning (when it was raining) here he had used his keys to start the car and had taken the house key off his chain! I was locked out of my house at 6:45am in my pjs! How horrifying! Good thing my teen boys were inside with the babies or I don't know HOW I would've gotten back in. Your post made me think about the inside doors as well. Thanks!
