In this movie "God" is a woman played by Alanis Morrissette, but what do you think?

Now this is lovely question to answer... the age old question of the gender of God.... I believe that God is neither male nor female or rather that he is male as well as female i.e. God is the Union of male and female .... Infcat God being universal energy has no shape and no gender and no form... It just exits

Its a funny question I dint realise until i read the Da Vinci Code and Clestine Prophecy... and then I could smile at the world gone by that they just took it for granted that God was male....

I loved that they showed God as a woman. I am a pagan, so it's in my 'nature' (excuse the pun lol) to believe that God is both male and female (if you remember, Chris Rock says 'she's not REAlLY a woman...she's not really anything') and neither male nor female. I look to God in Her female form, and I love that Dogma shows that side of Deity.

I love that movie, Chris Rock is perhaps in one of his most intelligent roles of his career, and that he makes it hilarious is a credit to Kevin Smith for writing so well and Chris Rock, for carrying it so well. I think that God can take any form that makes his people comfortable. Children picture God as this all knowing, all seeing God, in this I wonder if the vision of a cloud speaking down wisdom isn't a perfect personification of the mystery that is this deity.

First of all, great topic! *RATED I'm so impressed with the responses as well ; ) *RATED! I hate to say it, for fear of being repremanded ((hhmm response #1)) but God is God. God is Spirit, neither male nor female, yet both!

LOL, I just don't like little three word answers that don't convey a persons' point of view, which I thought was the purpose of MyLot, sharing points of view. Thank you for your response, I thought this would be a fun topic as well, and insightful! :)

When I think of God, I guess do to the majority of media or surronding influences when he is mentioned or portrayed I think MALE..however really I guess it is more of a sunbeam or mist sort of thing that comes to mind when I think of the actually personification of God as a "thing"..ha...so..um...asexual?

It's funny that God is commonly reffered to as He or Him. We have known of many female Goddesses too though. I agree that in personification, God is Light (Holy Spirit) (THEGODDESS AND THE CHURCH)http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/probe/docs/godd-chu.html (GODDESSES AND FEMALE ARCHTYPES OF THE WORLD) http://www.lilithgallery.com/library/goddesses.html (MOTHER GODDESS) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Goddess

I guess it depends on which bible you are reading and which faith you follow. If Adam was created based on the vision of god then I would have to say that god is a man but that's simply a mortals thought pattern. I don't think that god is male or female, a higher power is a higher power. We don't go around looking at atoms and rocks or other things as male or female so why tag a superior being with one or the other.

i'm not religious and all, but theologically and philosophically, i think God is patterned to whatever form which an individual may think of, we only lived in the notion of God being a "He" because in the past, the masculine race is dominant over the feminine, hence the Bible denoted God as a male. i agree that God is God, neither a male or a female, and in fact, God may not even be a living thing in form to begin with. i don't know, i have this really tricky and kind of silly question in my head: what would God be like in the perspective of, say, a dog? would God take a human form? i guess not. so from there, i think everyone else should be free on how to perceive God, either as a male, a female, an asexual or even a non-human being. for all we know, God may be everyone and everything at the same time. and frankly, i don't think it really matters, the most important thing is how we believe in Him/Her, and how strong our faith is.

All i know is that Go is Spirit. If He is Spirit, then we cannot know because a spirit does not have the kind of flesh we have or created to give birth to babies, which we can say give birth to gender issue.

Thank you for your remarkable insight to the subject, I commend you for your explanation of your views and your gift with words! You shouldn't waste people's time with that, this is a theological question, if you've not the capacity to think like that, MOVE ON!

I think G-d can come down in either form. But the essence is male. At least I hope so.If G-d is female, I'm going to hell. Because if G-d is female, then why didn't she birth Jesus?

I'm also Pagan so am very open to different concepts of God and begrudge no one their own beliefs about it. But I fail to see how we can believe in an ALL powerful, ALL knowing being then try to limit it with our crude, human labels? I feel it's really rather arrogant of us in a way but I understand too that the human animal is often driven to and comforted by tucking everything into neat little manageable pigeon holes. It helps them comprehend their world and deal with it more easily. I believe that God is ALL! Male, female, Buddha, Jesus, Odin...ALL (and that it makes religious intolerance all the more sad but that's a whole other discussion ;)) I feel that any of the "aspects" I just named and all the rest are simply another way for us to break God into bits, if you will, easier for our limited minds to comprehend.

Is it really the right question? Why do we believe that GOD should be man or woman? Surely GOD is sexless. He/She created man. He/she did not 'give birth' to man so must therefore be asexual. However, going by some of the things that happen in our world (allowed by GOD) suggest that SHE must be female. There is no other logical explanation for the invention of 'WINDOW SHOPPING'!
