Did you get laid off when you were getting close to retirement

Ok, I had over 22 years in a big computer company when I was given the Bum s rush. I was told I had to find a different job and was given a database containing some 600 open positions. When I took out all of the ones that I could not apply for, they did not meet qualifications for a job that I could get, there were about 60 jobs left. None of which were even in the same state. Now I did think about moving but I had a friend who moved for a job that was supposed to be a 5 or 10 year contract. Within 2 years he had to move again and then lost that job. I am looking at jobs at just over a 1/3 of my previous salary, it is hard to start again when in your mid 50's. Tell me your story, how many years did you have in and how did they get rid of you? How did you feel? How old are you and were you able to get a job in the same field at a comparable salary?

I worked at a clinic and was planning on retiring from there till the office manager started going though menopause and turned into a royal you know what. SO I walked. It was hard starting over. Had to use up my 401k plan so hate to think of that. I am at a good company now and will retire from there. It is a company that actually appreciates its workers. Or at least I think they do. Sorry to hear about your situation.

That suck. She went through menopause and you took the beating. I still have not touched the 401K, but that is coming up next, I spent years saving for my son for college, and then he joined the Navy (what a kid) so I used his college fund to live on. Last month was the home equity loan. I think it will be the same for this month. Hopefully, comes March I will be solvent and can then start to pay back that loan.

What a terrible way to be treated. I get so angry at these companies. My dad was "forced" into retiring from a mill that closed up. He was lucky enough to be within 3 years of retirement age and could collect UE until he got to the point where he could collect. That, along with a severence package helped him a lot but there were thousands like him that were simply too old to really get another job and they knew it, and had no options to retire for at least 5 years. It's disgusting how quickly and easily a company tosses aside it's workers. Just keep that in mind when you work for someone at any age... you are nothing more than a money maker to them. There is no bond there like there were with many small companies years ago. They won't think twice to push you out the door if it means saving them money. Good luck in your job searching. I hope you find something wonderful.

Thanks, the place I am looking at is non-profit, it pays less then 1/2 of what I was making, which really sucks. But I don't have many choices. It is funny, my son was more angry about getting laid off then I was--I found out 3 days before his high school graduation and just a few months before he was to go into the Navy. He complained 1 - because his years of school were stressful and they wrecked what should have been a great day. Then as he put it, he felt bad. I had been a single parent for a long time and I had put all of my time and effort into him and I was just about to come to a point in my life where I could begin to have my life back and they ruined it.

I m not near retirement but yes after about 18 years in the clerical auto industry i was let go. They had five stores and went done to one, all the people that they kept had much less time then i did. It did upset me at first. But with all that is going on there i think it was for the best now. I still have not found a job it has been about four months, but i have told myself that i am not getting back into that industry. So now i am trying to figure out what i want to do. Which is very hard. I will be forty this year and it is also hard to find a decent paying job at that age because yes all they really want to do is hire the younger at a much lower rate. sorry for the rambling.

I am faced with the same problem. Now that I have been unemployed for 6 months I have been told that if I am offered a job that I will have to accept it regardless of the salary. Therefore I have been more choosey when it comes to sending off my resume. When I am interviewed I tell them what I am looking for in a job. I want a job that will take me into retirement.

I agree with the take me into retirement, the place I am looking at told me they expect at least a 3 year commitment if I get hired there. I like that, though I am thinking about starting nursing school this summer. It will be a haul, but my concern is, will i be able to get a job as an RN in my late 50's. It is funny, I don't really feel that old.
