At what age did you start driving?

I was 15. When I was 15 years old there was a rule that after you took drivers ed. (age 15+) you could get your learner's permit. That allowed you to drive as long as an adult 18+ was in the front seat with you. At 16, assuming you passed drivers ed and the test you could then drive alone. what about you?

Same here, but for us, we could drive before the class as long as we got our learner's permit.

I started driving at age 16.....a little. My father took me out for a few lessons, but after his hands had time to unclench from the dashboard he decided that I needed to take driver's ed. Driver's ed was a lot of fun. I climbed into the huge chrysler station wagon with the instructor and 4 of my classmates full of optimism. I soon learned that my classmates were all pretty good drivers. I, on the other hand, was an accident waiting to happen. My instructor was very patient with me and only pulled me over once. I was so embarrased when he leaned over and wrote a big "R" on my right hand and a big "L" on my left hand. I've always had trouble knowing my right from my left, so I kept turning the wrong way when he was giving me directions. I guess he had finally had enough that day. I took my driver's test after I graduated high school at the age of 19. Even though I had passed driver's ed, my father refused to let me drive his car, so I had no opportunity to take the test before then. The tester passed me on the condition that I promise to practice my left-hand turns. What was I going to do? Refuse? I'm happy to say that I'm a very good driver and have only been in one accident in my life (a minor one that was about 50% my fault).

I probably started drivng at about 8? 7 years old? Not sure. I've always lived on acres, and have had go karts, motorbikes, etc around me, so driving was just a natural thing to do. It was great practise and I got the hang of a manual at a very young age.

I learned to drive at 16 (my mom taught me). Went to driving school for more practice (I was 18).Finally got my driver's license. You may wonder why it took me so long to get my license...well it is because i never thought I'd learn to drive!!! I am only 4'7" tall.

I was 14 years old when I started driving. The first car that I drove was a 1993 Honda Prelude. Amazing car. I ended up buying a Prelude when I got my driver's license at the age of 16.

I got a hardship license at 15 since my father was disabled. Most of my friends got their permit at 15 and could drive with an adult until they got their license.

Same here. I was 15 when I first started driving, I could still remember I was so nervous I drove the car over the sidewalk. Haha. It was a one time incident and thank god we were inside our village when it happened. After that, no accidents has ever happened to me again.

I'm 21 and I still haven't started to drive. Getting behind the wheel makes me way too anxious! I'm not sure if I'll ever learn.

Well in my country, you're only allowed to drive when you come of age. That's really stupid!:( I envy countries like your when driving is allowed from 15 years up! That's so unfair! My mother has thought me a few here and there about driving, but I never got behind the wheel on a real road.

I start to learn driving only just last year October 2006, when my company lend me a Nissan Frontier as my service vehicle for a given project. Well, I was already 29 years old when I start to learn driving. It takes guts and quick decision that leads me to be a better driver. Luckily until now, though I'm a new driver, I don't have yet experience any minor or major vehicular accidents. I'm amazed of what I've achieved in a short period. And that's me as always, learning things as quickly as I could. So, just be a defensive driver and follow all traffic rules.

It amazes me that Americans can drive on their own when your 16. In Australia you start learning when your 16, and have to drive with a fully licensed driver until your 18. So I got my learners the day I turned 16, but before then I often drove my dads car sitting on his lap when I was younger, and got to drive my dads car round abandoned car parks when I was 14 or 15.
