Child labourers in Karnataka

The profiel of child labour in Karnataka (Annu Joseph) reports that children in Karnataka are mostly engaged in activities like agriculture, small scale industries, construction, hotels, shops automibile garages and domestic labour. Other activities involving children are beedi rolling, cotton ginning, quarrying, fish processing, sericulture related work, agarbatti and brick-making. Every school drop out is persumed a working child, there could be over 30 lakh child labourers. According to recent estimates there are about 11.5 lakh child workers in Karnataka. Between 1995 and 1997, 10,977 factories were inspected and the practice of child lbaour was found in 403 factories. There are almost 40,000 child workers in Bangalore. According to a survey conducted by the Samasti Trustee and ICDSS, a voluntary organization, there are about 10,000 children employed in the 900 silk twisting units in Magadi taluk, similary child workers, especially girls are also conspicious in the beedi roling industry.
