The pirates who appear so very often in The Asterix Graphic Novels only to be bashed by Asterix and Obelix(there are no hard feelings between them, it's just for fun)they can be thought of as caricatures of the North Americans which the rest of the world calls USA.There are two main reasons why the pirates can be thought of as depicting the Americans:firstly because the ship consists of people of different races hence it in a subtle way alludes to the ship in Herman Melville's famous novel Moby Dick.Secondly one of the pirates of African origin often says this line "We are in the same boat brother",mostly when the ship is sinking. This is a line from a famous song by the notable antiracist Black singer Paul Robson. The fact that the Americans dont have a long cultural history is hightened here that these pirates are almost always on sea which can be thought of as representing nowhere. These characters are all pirates and their profession is a tongue-in-the-cheek allusion to United States's Foreign policy.

well, you seem to forget the basic difference between those pirates and us(are you US citizen too by the way?) unlike the pirates who get bashed up by (shall we call them french?) asterix and obelix, it is the US which conquers the rest of the world with its superior might... not that the attitude of the Bush government is much different from the pirates' of course... GWB, like a pirate, greedily invades any country which is capable of provinding oil to our country at cheap rate... i agree its for the betterment of our citizens, but the cost paid by innocent people in other countries makes you think twice every time you go to a gas filling station, doesn't it?

I agree with you that the attitude of the Bush government reminds one of the pirates, but I would like to know what you Americans really think of that attitude?Does it feel nice to know that innocent people are dying throughout the world so that you can fill gas in your car?
