what does it take to be a successful detector! Well to start out it takes dedication. Dedication to your hobby. If you ever want to find stuff, you have to keep swinging the big D, lmao. Don't expect that will you ever find anything your first time out and do expect something everytime you go. this can be a very lucrative hobby which atcually pays for itsself in the long run! :) but it can on the other hand be tiresome especially when you have hit a place with tons of metal trash and hitting spots that have already been hunted. It can get old and alot of people give up, because they haven't found anything yet. %75 of the time people are not finding anything is because they don't know their machine. Learn your machine like ti was the back of your hand. Learn the sounds and also learn the correct settings. Research, research research. I spend all day researching hotspots and new places to try my luck. It pays, cause time is precious. krissy

I always thought this would be a fun hobby, but haven't ever tried it. I know the machines can get expensive, though. Do you have any that you recommend? Something good, but not overly expensive? Virginia Beach, with all of the visitors we get during the Spring and Summer months, would be a good place to check out, especially the parks and beaches. :) Good way to get some exersize in, as well! :)

Yea, I took up this hobby cause I have arthritis in every joint of my body, when I sit at home on the computer, I hurt sometimes badly...but when I get out there and get exercize, I feel better and not so much pain, so this bennefits me in two ways, the exercise I need to wart away the pain and maybe I might get lucky and find something nice. Yes, Virgina beach is an awesome place to detect, I have been there several times, my sister in law lives there and my husband was born in Norfolk. :)I never been there to detect, maybe someday I will! :) krissy

also you will want one made for the beach, so the machine can handle the high salt concentrations. try www.kellycodetectors.com I used the Fisher Aquanaut, alittle pricey, but well worth the money! :) krissy

I have a detector too, I found a dime the first time I was out with it, LOL. Nothing since, but then I haven't used it in a long time.

This sounds interesting, I was dreaming about this while a kid .. going in treasure hunts of course :) But I think I will not be able to find many things in a busy city even at the busy parks around here ..

To be a successful detector you must know what you are doing and therefore you must go to the right area and also know your detector machine this is a certainty otherwise you shall search and search for nothing but if you are lucky and do find something then it will be well worth your time, I have heard of some recent stories in Ausralia where they have found precious metal recently due to their detectors.

Yes, if you don't know what you are doing, you will not find what you are seeking! It's important to research too. without research you not know where all the good hunting spots are. krissy

yes, You know I was the typical oxy moron when I first started...My detector was giving false readings and started my first day, with the digging huge craters, then the item disappeared into thin air, was no longer there, it wasn't till I learn my machine and went through several upgrades that I started finding the good stuff! krissy

That's got to be a fun hobby, tiggyann! :) I'm one of those people who have the skills to find "treasures in the trash heap" without a metal detector... In the past few years, I've found works of art, (One of which I'm sure is worth really big bucks!) cash totalling up to about $500.00 so far, appliances like two brand new Foreman Grills-complete with all the accessories, jewelery-six very stylish men's watches, and so on... I'm saying this in a spirit of encouragement, keep on searching for the Good Stuff, because there aren't enough hours in the day for you to find everything that's out there! If I had a metal detector, I'd be rich!!! lol!

I've often thought about getting a metal detector. What would be cost for a beginner and where are these sold. Thank you Tiggyann.
