Emotions concerning animals and people. Why we care more for animals?

Is it just me, but whenever i see an animal die in a film or on tv in general i feel this sudden heart renching feeling. But when people die, I just shrug it off. Other than just me, this appears to be the same with all my friends and family. Does anyone have an answer to this question, as it does puzzle me. The only answer that i can come up with is that animals are defenceless, and humans naturally feel protective over them. Whereas with humans, we think they should fend for themselves. What do you think?

I feel the same way. Watching an animal die on TV brings tears to my eyes but if a human gets killed it doesnt really bother me. I guess maybe it's because animals are so innocent and defenseless.

Yes I feel the same, and unfortunately I can't explain it either. But worries me is when I look at places, where people interact, like MyLot I see in general a love of animals but then why dear God are there so many cases of animal cruelty and abuse. Another SA
