what type of dog should I get?

I want a big dog. I want a dog that will be obedient, protective and playful. Im thinking the size of a german shephard. Im actually leaning towards that dog. I want them to be smart and easily trained. They cant be bad tempered. I want them to do well with visitors and kids. Any suggestions?
