How long is too long to breastfeed?

I've been wondering how long is too long to breastfeed after hearing of a local doctor who actually turns moms in to CPS for breastfeeding after a year because, get this, it's 'child abuse'. I've also heard that the National Health Institute recommends that children be breastfed for at least two years... and, of course, we have moms who breastfeed until well after their children can lift the shirt up and crawl into mamma's lap, so... any thoughts? How long is too long?

Well, me personally I prefer one year and no more..but that is MY personal preference. I don't think the government should be allowed to tell us how long we can nurse our children, then they will be telling us what WE are allowed to eat and how long... It's a dangerous road to go down.

Enough with the Child Abuse crap. I think these people have nothing better to do then to find ways to control everyone elses lives but there own. Sorry if I sound angry but I am after seeing the kios and distruction they caused with people I know.

Yes i agree it should be up to the mother and child. I personally decide it was enough at 11 months. I dont agree with that silly doctor that after one it is abuse. I don't agree with it once they start school. Have seen a few programmes on that where 7 and 8 year olds are still nursing. That to me is wrong.

I think whenever you as the individual thinks it is time to give it up would be the time to give it up . I wouldn't give it up because others think you should or because of some story you might have heard . But generally woman feel that whent the baby starts getting teeth this is a good time to call it quits especially if they like to bite . Although I don't really think a person should wait til their child starts school either as I have heard some parents do .

There isn't a "too long." Baby and mom will both know when it's time for them. There is never a point when the milk is no longer good for baby/child, and I'm pretty sure you can't force a child to nurse..lol, especially one with teeth! That doctor should be turned in for malpractice, in my opinion.

I think as long as the milk comes you can continue...This is natural and milk will stop coming when the baby dont need it...

This doctor needs to find a new hobby. The people who investigate abuse have so much to do already that it isn't fair to them or to the kids who are actually being abused to take up their valuable time with such nonsense.

I think 2 years is too long, but that's my opinion. It's true like someone else said, the parent and child will both know when it's time but I think at a year or when the child is able to hold their own bottle up on their own that's long enough.

I have seen a kid go to his mom and pull up her shirt. If a kid can do that, he is way too old. That will scar the kid for life. Plus it's disgusting and no one wants to see it. She sat there just a talking like it wasn't happening. How can a person do that? I think they should be turned in. In a way it is child abuse. I think half a year is fine if that's what you want to do.

but WHY is it child abuse? Expecially if the child instigates it... would one instigate their own abuse?

I dont think there is a time limit on it. When mom and child decide its to long then they will stop if it works for them then there shouldnt be a problem.
