You are right in saying that picking a branch of psychology is overwhelming at first. From my experience, I found it to be hard to fully figure out what I wanted to do when I started my psych undergrad. If you are truly interested in cases and murder, I would recommmend forensic or criminal psychology. Or if you are interested in treating 'psychos' then I would recommend going into clinical work and studying abnormal psychology. What I really recommend is taking various psychology classes; like development, social psy, abnormal, I/O, cognitive; and see what really interests you most. Maybe that will help lead you into what really want to do. I found from my experience that it took me a while to find my niche. I took a variety of classes, and slowly pinpointed where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. Good Luck! If you have any questions, let me know. Hope that helps!

I am currently doing reasrch for a media sci-fi project I have been asked to consult on. It involves the break down of a person who is motivated to destroy a man's life because he broke her heart. I had to reserch actual civil and criminal cases of women that stalked and terrorized former lovers. The one factor i found in common is that 3 of the women has absentee fathers and the five others had fathers that were deceased at an early age and had no postive male role model in their upbringing. I am currently working with another consultant to determine if the trauma they experienced from the loss of their fathers contributed to their being obssesive with the man that broke their heart and also what components did this man have that they felt matched their father or who their father would be if he were around or alive. It's kind like of being a human archeologist .

If you really have an interest in serious crimes, abnormal psychology would be where you want to start. But it's hard. And if you do want to go into criminal psychology, be ready for a set of very stringent psych test to evaluate your own mental state. Those evaluations are *brutal*. Criminal psych is a tough field to get into, and they are very picky about who they take. And it's... a very depressing field. I honestly don't regret that I had to drop out when I got hurt. Your first time up close seeing the bloody, broken and raped corpse of a little kid is something that never, ever leaves you. Good luck with your career!

This interest of studying cases of muders and profiling criminals is a very intersting study. It is called forensic psychology. You study the root of the behaviors and it even goes as far as studying back into greek mythology and philosophy. For example the Edipus complex, a man who kills his father because he is harboring feelngs of passions of wanting his own mother. I research profiles for murder mysteries and sci-fi projects that I write on. I am into this is as well. From a psychological standpoint, if you are going to be in to this, it also means the internship would involve interacting with individuals, very few forensic graduates can become successful in their careers on research alone, it means being exposed to people that many would deem unstable or dangerous. So you woud hav eto be comfortable being live and up close with these situations to gain credntials in this field.
