Smoking during Pregnancy

I want some serious answers here, not just judgemantal ones. I have known several people who have smoked while they were pregnant and the outcome of their pregnancy and baby was non other than healthy. Basically-everyone knows you should not smoke while pregnant, but who has actually had something go wrong? Wrong with the baby or wrong with the mother? I do not want statisitcs of "could be's" I want what has actually happend to you or someone you know.

My mother bragged about smoking heavily the whole time I was pregnant with me. She said I turned out fine so what's the big deal? I was talking about it to my bf and he made a valid point. He reminded me that I had a lot of health problems as a child and I still am prone to bronchitis and other respiratory ailments, and suggested that I may have been a healthier child if my mother had not smoked and had taken better care of herself during her pregnancy. I don't knwo what the answer is but thought that may add something to the discussion.

Well my mother smoked through her pregnancy with me , and after I was born. I have always had asthma , and I guestt that her smoking is the reason. I also have a bad immune system , and get the flu all the time.

I think why to risk somebody for no fault of his/her.You have to remember one thing that when you are pregnant you are not the only one who will be affected just remember that.

I have a friend who just gave birth to her second baby. He was born 3 weeks early and only weighed 3 lbs 4 oz. She smoked during the entire pregnancy. He was born on January 19th and is still in the hospital. I'm not sure when he will get to come home. With her first baby, she quit smoking when she was trying to conceive, he was born almost 2 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 11 oz. He was over the twice size of his new baby brother. Her doctor seems to think that this might be partly to do with the fact that she smoked through this pregnancy. I don't really know for sure, though.

I smoked with my two pregnancies the first time it didnt affect me at all. The second time it amde my asthma flair up which I didnt even know I had asthma. I ended up in the hosptial for a week when I was 37 weeks pregnant with my son, I was having to get breathing treatments 4-6 times a day it wasn't much fun at all. I had to quit smoking because I couldnt breathe, they said my asthma flair up was due to pregnancy. Even second hand smoke bothered me.

I stopped smoking for the time being til I had my son which was only about 2 weeks, then I went right back to smoking I know its bad and I should have stay away from them being how I already quit. I am pregnant with number three right now and I have yet to quit with this one. I want to and have cut back alot but I just cant seem to kick the habit. My kids weight was unaffected by me smoking though my daughter weighed 8lbs 3 oz and my son weighed 8lbs 10 oz The doctors are expecting this one to be over 9lbs!

My gosh! Big babies-so that is not a concern at all. I too smoked when I was pregnant with my first 2 and my children were born healthy as well.

I have a friend who smokes. She continued to do so while she was pregnant. Her doctor was also a smoker and said that the extra stress she would have put herself through if she tried to give up during this time would probably have made the pregnancy harder for both her and her child. She now still smokes but in a different room to where her child is. I think if you have a family history of asthma or problems with pregnancies or births then giving up is the only option, but I'm open minded to it really. However I do have a problem with people smoking around my kids and me when I'm pregnant.

Very interesting-I have not heard a doctor say not to quit due to stress. Many docotrs do recommend cutting down if you cannot quit though. What I don't get though is the doctor's that jump to blame the mother the reasons for anything is because she smoked, when the same problems happent to babies of mothers who do not smoke.

My sister-in-law smoked during all 4 of her pregnancies and also bragged about the kids being okay. Since she also lost her children to her mother for Guardianship, she forgets that all her children had severe asthma and respiratory problems. So bad that 2 of the 4 had to have a breathing machine treatment several times a day for the first years of their lives. All of them still fight sinus problems, wheezing and asthma with an inhaler.

i've seen one, my officemate, she smokes but i never heard that her baby had problems at birth. although it really is not good to the health, for some reason the baby went out well.

Just as I have mentioned in other threads....I realize there is some concrete proof that smoking can be very harmful, it does seem however that there is a lot of gray area with the whole subject. Thank you.

I am completly against this....you should not smoke or drink during pregnancy. It'll seriously harm your child, and we do not need anymore mental people in this world!

OK king... show the proof of what you have done. And what your parents did that made you so "mental", as you seem to make yourself out to be. READ the topic IN FULL before you spout off whatever you want/feel. I have 3 children, ALL of which I smoked my whole pregnancies with. And well over a pack a day with ALL THREE! Each 1 of them at birth weighed, 6 lb 15 oz, 7 lb, and 6 lb 15 1/2 oz! I don't think the smoking had anything to do with the fact that they were all born the same size, weight, and all with NO health problems! The sickest any of my kids have been is the chicken pox... maybe those chickens should quit smoking around all them school kids and mine wouldn't have gotten sick... right? My kids have had the stomach flu, swimmers ear in the summer (when they spend 12+ hours a day in the pool), colds once in a while in the winter... all the normal stuff that everyone gets sick from. Statistics? I can't tell you any.. my doctors all told me "you should quit, it's bad for you and the babies, small babies means small kids when they grow up." Hmmmm my kids are in no way small. My oldest daughter is now 13, she is 6' 3" and weighs about 200 lbs. My son is 12 and is 5' 4" and about 145 lbs and my 4 year old daughter is 3' 5" and about 50 lbs. If I had a few more of these "tiny babies" caused from smoking... I could have my own football team!! It's GENETICS and that's about all there is to it. It's all in God's hands if you want to look deep into it. I could go on and on but don't need to keep talking to the walls. So let's see what others have to say.

I had a friend that doesn't smoke but mingle around with people who smoke. When her baby was born she was healthy but weighs only 5 pounds. She also goes in and out of the hospital because of flu and colds. I think it really affects eventhough the mother doesn't smoke but only gets second hand smoke.

Wow....I have never heard of second hand smoke affects to a pregnancy. I wonder how true that is....thank you
