Boxing. Two guys pounding each other over and over. What's your take on it?

My grandfather was a boxer and I'm pretty sure he had a few screws punched loose in his head. Of course by the time I knew him he was a very old man and it may have just been his age. I loved that old man though and he wouldn't hurt a fly unless you threaten him or a loved one.
But I don't know, I still can't understand what would make two grown men want to pound each other like that.
I also created and maintain a website for a poet and he and pretty much his entire family were boxers and he writes the best poems.
Both these men had hearts as big as all outdoors but they would pound another man in the face and body for sport. Hmmmmm
What do you think about boxing?

I could never understand boxing myself. It just never made sense to watch two men or women for that matter just pummel one another until one is knocked out. Now Kick boxing I can at least say there is a lot of training involved in this and it's as much skill as stregnth, not that there isn't in normal boxing but with Kick Boxing it's a different form and more about the ability not just who is strongest or has more endurance.

It's a pretty gruesome sport but like you say it's gone to the promoters now.
thanks for your response.
