When do think is the best time to prune, trim or thin out apple trees? How well do they handle being thinned?

You can prune apple trees almost any time except in the fall, but late winter is best, I think. They respond well to thinning as long as you don't overdo it.

When the trees go dormant is the best time. However you can prune then in the early spring but you might lose some flowers which means not as many apples. If you don't care about the apples then let it flower as a spring ornamental then prune it. You will also have less apples to deal with in the fall.
