Why do people have love affairs?

I'm just wondering why people, especially long time married couples, oftentimes have love affairs? I just find it so sad that even if you promise eternal love and loyalty and fidelity with your spouse, you're still tempted to look at other people and most even have affairs. Is this really something you can't avoid? I just believe everyone has a choice not to fall into temptation. Yes, you will get tempted, but it's a conscious choice not to get into the water. What do you think?

I agree with the statement everyone has a choice, but I think the reason affairs happen is because the couple is not trying hard and working hard at maintaining a relationship. A marriage has to be 50-50, you can't have one person doing the majority of the work. I believe nowadays, once people get married they think that is it, they have finished with all the "courting" and don't have to work at it anymore as they've achieved this goal. Unfortunately that isn't the case and if one partner isn't working hard on making the relationship work, then the other one begins to feel unloved and unappreciated.
