I am doing a bulletin board at school, for my reading program and the idea I have is the will be, "We all love to read!" and then list some of us adults favorite childhood books or stories. I am running out of ideas, this is a HUGE board. So what was your favorite childhood stories or book? Then a breif reason why. Thanks to all in advance :-)

My favourite childrens book is "The Enchanted Wood" by Enid Blyton .. it's pure innocent fantasy .. it's all about three children who move home to the country and there is a wood behind their house .. in the wood is a large tree .. people live in the tree like Moonface and Silky, who makes wonderful toffee that pops in the mouth .. then at the top of this tree is a ladder that goes up into a new land every day .. It's funny, it's a good story, it's easy to read, and there are no 'nasty bits' in it at all .. I recommend this book to any adult who is having a tough time .. the pure escapism of the book helps to put a smile back on most folks faces ... and I read it myself at least twice a year just to enjoy the fun of it all over again !

Do you know, it's really very hard for me to remember most of the books I read in childhood now? I read so many that most of them have gone out of my mind! *laugH* If you're talking for quite young kids, though, nothing can beat those good old Dr. Seuss stories. You have to love his imagination and sense of rhyme. For somewhat older kids, I remember all of the Judy Blume books being wonderful. Oh, and I also remember reading and loving the Dr. Doolittle series, although I don't remember the author. But I've always loved animals, so those were a particular favorite! It seems like all of the books that i can actually remember were series, though, which makes sense because of how it took longer to read through all of them and they left a bigger impact on me than just one book one. There is also a really amazing cat story that I can't think of the name of that I read several times over from the library, it's kind of like a cat version of Watership Down, and I was obsessed with that book, but I honestly can't remember the name. Drat. *laugh*

My favorite children's book is called No Flying in the House, and its about this little girl named Annabelle and her dog Gloria. Annabelle is the child of a human and a fairy princess who is sent to the human world to protect her from the fairy king, as he is opposed to the marriage of his daughter and the human. Gloria is her protector while here, and then Annabelle learns the truth about herself, thanks to an evil fairy named Belinda, who disquises herself as a cat. Its a good story for little children, my five year old sat through me reading the entire book to her outloud, it took three hours and she didn't get up off the couch the entire time.

My favorite children's book is "Mandy" by Julie Edwards. The author is actully the famous actress/singer Julie Andrews, but she used Edwards for thsi book (I think it's her amrried name). Anyway, the story is about an orphan girl who happens upon a run down old cottage. She sneaks over the orphanange wall everyday and starts taking care of the cotatge, cleaning it and buying things for it. It is such a lovely story and so well written. I've read it many times over the years.

My favourite children's story is The Gruffalo, it's a firm favourite with both children and adults and when I was doing voluntary work at a primary school, the children loved to hear this story over and over again! We even did a school play based on the Gruffalo. It is a truly lovely story with hidden meanings. They've even done a film about the Gruffalo too. They did a follow up called The Gruffalo's child but that wasn't nearly as good.

Honestly, one of my favorite books as a child was "Little Bear." I can't even tell you who wrote it, but I know it has been rereleased lately! Another favorite was "Where the Wild Things Are."
