Dressing-up your pets: what do you think?

Certain pet owners like to dress up their pets in novelty costumes. Some people think it's stupid, others think it's cruel. Personally, I think the animals are happier without them. I don't even put a collar on my cat, she's an indoor cat and has no need for it. I can see some weaker or debilitated dogs wearing something warm when they are walked outside in bad weather, but other than that, I wouldn't dress up a pet in a costume just for my amusement. What are your thoughts on this?

Why would a cat, want to wear a hat? I don't get it? When my two hounds were puppies, I got them some little boots, to protect their little feet from the snow, and salt on the roads, but that didn't last long. They chewed them to shreds. The girl dog, Rosie, just looked at me, as if to say...are you out of your mind? I'm not wearing those, you should have saved your money! Lesson learned !

The cat probably doesn't get it either! I've seen some (sleigh) dogs with snow "socks". I suppose those might help the dog. But I imagine most dogs' reactions are the same as your dogs' :)

I have a cat and small dog and I don't want either of them to hate me. I can't imagine dressing them up for fun or even for halloween. My daughter puts a small, strap-on hat on our cat and she goes nuts trying to get it off. I wouldn't torture her with clothes!

I agree with that :) It's bad enough when they have to have surgery of some kind and need to walk around with collars and such

I don't like it, my dog wears a collar when we go for a walk but that's it. my cat never wears anything. I see people with small dogs that have been trimmed in winter wearing a coat - why? Does'nt nature know how much hair they need? I don't think it looks cute, but that's just me.

I suppose that might possibly depend on the breed of the dog, eg: a dog breed originally from warm climates being taken into a cold weather region. In that case, I think maybe a little coat/cape can't harm them. But those novelty costumes... not that amusing to the animal, I'm sure!

When my children were small they often dressed our dogs up and put them into their doll's pram. The dogs would jump out and try to wriggle out of the clothes, so I guess they didn't like it. Other than that I think clothes on pets look absolutely rediculous.

I have to admit that I do find some of them funny or cute, but the animal's comfort and well-being comes first :)

I guess it depends on how much it annoys the animal. When I was a kid, my brother and I used to put glasses and hats on the dog, and she didn't seem to mind. We never even tried to take a picture of her, which seems to be why most people dress up their pets. There is a website called stuffonmycat where they let anybody post pics of their poor cats in costumes and strange situations. Most are ordinary ones of cats with scarves or flowers, but some are pretty funny. One is of a Godzilla toy hovering over an unsuspecting cat. I think it is pretty bizarre when they get a *lot* of clothes for a pet. But I have to admit, some of them make me laugh.

Yeah, it would be stupid coz that's what their furs are for. It wopuldn't be necessary to dress them.It would cause stress towards the animal due to the discomfort it gives the pets.

I agree with you. Some animals get very annoyed when they are forced to wear accessories. Eventually, I suppose they get used to it.

Answerer 1 If you have an outgoing dog and it isn't uncomfortable for them ...Why not. Most dogs would love the attention.. Be careful...If you have a male dog so the costume doesn't get in the way of going to the bathroom... That football jersey just hasn't been the same!!! Answerer 2 as a chihuahua Answerer 3 I think people dressing up their pets are seriously demeaning their pet. Plus they have way to much time on their hands..lmao To each their own but I feel bad for those poor animals. Answerer 4 I hope your mean pet and not peter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's cute if a person dresses up their pet for the holiday, as long as it's not hurting the pet.....now if a person was dressing up their peter for the holidays.........no comment! Answerer 5 cats and dogs are domesticated so far from their wild ancestors, a little extra fuss really doesn't make any difference. They don't know they are dressed up and look stupid. Answerer 6 Well the dog dont know why but most dogs I see dressed up have that sad look on thier face... reminds me of being in chunky cheese and looking at all the faces of all the dads in there Answerer 7 i think that it is okay as long as the pet is okay with it. i hate to see an animal when it isn't comfortable. Answerer 8 I think it's great b/c they are part of the family to. Answerer 9 I don't think there is anything wrong with it. They are part of the family, aren't they? I just ordered my puggle a new halloween outfit and can't wait to get it on him. It's only a day, so what's it going to hurt.
