Teacher puts boys head in photocopier.

A five-year old elementary school child was taken to the hospiatl after a teacher allegedly placed his head into the photocopier and photocopid his face. He suffered eye irritation from the ultraviolet light given off by the photocopier. The teacher states that the class was studying "light and dark" and "how photocopiers work." The parents have removed the child from the school. What are your thoughts?

Lets see, perhaps she could photocopy her hind parts to see if she could get the exact location of your foot, for safe removal! *insert wink here*

Sounds to me like the teacher may have thoght she had a fun learning plan for the day. She should have researched whether there could be any dangers to doing this. While I think she should be reprimanded and perhaps punished somehow. I doesn't sound like she was trying to harm the child. Being a teacher though she definately should have check on the safety aspects before proceding.

Yeah, sounds like she got over zealous with wanting to illustrate her teaching. But for gosh sakes, why didn't she photocopy the child's hand? Or if she wanted a face, do her own face! Like you, I doubt she had any intention of harming the child, just didn't think things through very well!

oh. i was hoping you'll say that the teacher was the one removed from that school. that's so rude to do to a five year old child. it's not right in anyway we look at it. i hope the parents will file a case against the teacher and if the school covers up for the teacher's mistake, i hope that the parents will also file a case against the entire administration. what they did to that kid is so disrespectful.

That is awful. Why is the teacher still in school? I would think that she would be put on suspension or fired.

Hahahha it can happens only in your country many of us did the same with the photocopier just for fun. Didn't we? i didnot hear that the photocopier works with ultraviolet light, but even if it is true his eyes was lighted for a second. So it is a stupidness.

I think a hand may have been more appropriate. It was poor judgement on the teachers part. I hope there is no permanent damage to the boys eyes. Wrong choice of body parts in my opinion.

Yes Alley, I agree. It is fine to teach children how and what a photocopier does, but it could have been done just as well by photocopying his hand or foot! Yes, very poor judgement.

As a woman studying to be an instructor, I must say that if you only want to be a teacher for the paycheck, then you should know that teaching is not for you. Teaching means being a mentor, instructor, tutor, guide, and friend. If you cannot be all of those things to your students, then you are not a teacher.

Oh yes. You said that very well. It is the same with my profession of nursing. Probably the same with almost any profession, if your heart isn't in it, you won't be very good at it!

I think you can learn how photocopiers work without sticking the kid's head in the copier. Either this teacher is psycho, or this is a crazy lie gone wrong. I've heard crazy stuff like that that actually stemmed from the kid not getting their way, so the lie they tell to their parents just snowballs. One of my students went from lying to his parents about assignments to telling his parents that we didn't allow him to go to the restroom when he needed to puke. All because the previous excuses didn't fly.

Oh my gosh. That is horrible! Teachers are often scapegoated in my opinion. I mean, if parents are upset in any way with the operation of a school district, who better to start complaining about than your child's teacher. It is an immediate 'foot in the door.'

I can't believe a teacher would do that to a child :( She needs to have her head shoved on the photo copier with her eyes held open and see how she likes it! (Sorry I know that sounds mean, I just hate to see children hurt) The teacher should be removed from the school, not the student.

I agree with you that the teacher was probably just over-zealous with her lesson plan and wanted to illustrate her point. But she obviously has no common sense at all; I have to wonder how someone that stupid got through college and graduate school to become a teacher? How about photocopying a student's hand? That would have demonstrated the process just as effectively. Even though it was most likely not a malicious act, I think that the teacher should be disciplined and placed on probation. And of course she should make a formal apology to the student, his family, and the school board. I hope that the child has no damage to his eyes.

I did think about the disciplinary action for the teacher. The article did not elaborate on what happened to the teacher. I agree it wasn't likely meant in a malicious way, but nonetheless, the child was harmed. I agree that probation might be in order.

I don't think that the teacher really knew that she was hurting the child. She should have studies what would have happened before she did this. I have photocopied my own face before and never had a problem with eye irritation of anything else. I think that she should be talked to by the school, but I don;t think any serious punishment should come out of it.

The most ironic part -- if the child had stuck his head in there by himself, he would probably have been punished. But let the teacher do it and ... the child gets pulled from school.

That is sad! I'm sure that the teacher didn't have any idea that her student was going to suffer from her doing this, but I wish that she had done some research or thought about it more before this stunt was undertaken. I have enough eye problems myself to sympathize with anyone who has anything happen to their eyes :( I kind of don't blame the parents for removing their child from the school, although I think it would have been better if he could have just been moved to a different class or something. Did the teacher get in trouble?

Well Shy, the article didn't say. It did say that the parents were persuing legal action and had removed the child from the school.

Bizarre conduct on the part of the teacher, no doubt. But, I seriously don't think the boy suffered any eye irritation. I think that's bogus and part of a trumped up lawsuit effort. I can't see why this would make them remove him from the school, unless there were other underlying problems. Perhaps the boy was having other problems, too. Anyways, what 5 year olds are studying how photocopiers work? I don't even know any high school classes that study that? The whole thing sounds not quite right to me.

at first, i thought you were going to say she did so as some form of punishment. reading further though, it doesnt sound like there was any maltreatment intended towards the child. i think the teacher should not have used something like this as a teaching tool, but it looks like she made a genuine error in judgement. I also think the parents had every right to remove their child from the school though. The teacher should, and most likely will be reprimanded. and the school will probably adopt some policy regarding things like this now, but its certainly not a criminal act. As the parent of a six year-old, i would be as upset as the parents, but i'd also understand that as long as the teacher didnt mean any harm to my child, it was a mistake. the school should pay for the child's medical treatment, and the parents should sit and explain to their child what is going on. as a kid, they may simply believe that they did something wrong and that's why they cant go back to school. as parents, we need to be careful of our actions, because children interpret things in such a literal manner that we sometimes dont see what effect our actions have on them.

That teacher IS THE ONE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM SCHOOL. We all know that we only photocopy documents. How dare the teacher states that the class was studying "how photocopiers work". The ultraviolet light probably harmful for human eyes. If we could find the most uneducated teacher ever, this should be the one. That seems more possible than he just purposely harm the child by whatever reason. Thanks for the post! I'd like to know more details about this incident like where, when it happened?

I would have definitly caused a stir about this. A teacher should know the bright light would be too much for the child and it also taught the children that it was an okay thing to do. I don't think she should be fired, but there should be something she should have to do. One thing is stand up in front of her students and state she was wrong.
