The 10 item or less checkout or express checkout, do you get irritated?

Have you ever been shopping and been in a bit of a rush? You fly through the store grabbing your 2-3 needed items and report to the checkout area of the store only to find several people clogged in the '10 item or less' aisle or the 'express checkout aisle' with carts that have enough groceries to feed an army?

It drives me nuts. Or what about those self checkouts that Walmart has now. My Super Walmart has 4 self checkouts on each side of the check out section and someone stands at a counter and they see on their screen that you are ringing everything up. Someone took 2 full carts through the last time I was there. Maybe I'm wrong but I assumed that the self checkouts were another version of the speed checkouts???

The original intention was for people to get in and out with a few items, yes. However, I'm sure that nobody is going to say anything to those people who do not use it that way. I sometimes wonder if some of those people are putting things in the bags without ringing it up. Any thoughts on this?

Oh, I'm sure they probably do. They think that they are getting away with it,but it will catch up with them some day.

Most places have weighted scales. If the weight of the item placed in the bag doesn't match what they just rang up, the checkout monitor will be notified and come over to see what they put in the bag.

I am a bit annoyed, being a cashier myself, because customers following this big load are more likely to say something to ME than the person who pulled up to me with all that crap. It really gets me when people say "I think I may have more than..." and proceed to put their things on the conveyor :) But that is the ins and outs of a consumer-driven economy. They want it. Fast, first, and the best of. And it doesn't matter about others around them, as long as they have money they tend to think they own that line.

Thanks for giving us a cashier's viewpoint. I had never thought about that. You are right, I think most people for some reason don't say anything to the offending party, rather wait and unload on the cashier. Like you had any control over the situation!

The best response I have ever witnessed was given by a cashier. She looked very sweetly at the woman and said, "So, which ten items do you want the most?" The woman glared at her and said, "You've got some gall, I pay your wages." The cashier replied,"You do not pay my wages, Wal-Mart does, you only make it possible for them to." The woman abandoned the cart right there, and left the store. I wonder how many other cashiers would have the guts to do something like that.

OMG!! That is too good, "Which 10 items do you want the most." I so wish more cashiers would say something, even if not something that great! Even if they would just say, "I"m sorry, this line is for customers with 10 items or less, line XX is open for other customers." I wonder why they don't?

Sometimes I have seen the checker at the express lane call others into his or her line when there is no one else going through. I then feel badly when I see a shopper with only a few items come along to check out in Express, and the checker is still checking out the person with many groceries. It's an unfortunate situation, but it's not the fault of the shopper, and the checker was only trying to be more efficient.

Yes, Chwey, I have seen that too. And in that instance we would be unfairly assuming that the shopper wasn't following the rules. Very good point.

I am also very annoyed at this. I hate it when I run into the grocery to buy a gallon of milk and have to wait in line for 20 minutes while these people check out hundreds of items in a 10 items or less line. The people at the grocery store should enforce the policy if they are going to have these lanes available. I also see this with the speedy checkouts where you can check out yourself, people with tons of items and they just take their time and slowly scan and bag their cart full of groceries even though they won't all fit on the scale bagger.

This is sooooooooo annoying and one of my all time worst pet peeves. If I am behind one of these people I would generally make a point of saying loudly to the kids 'ok guys....how many items do we have, cos this is the express lane' and then continue to count our items out loud. No one has ever moved from the line from doing this but maybe they won't be so ignorant next time they come to the supermarket. One can only hope

Oh, yet another great, tactful way to get the point across. Very good, I like that! Yeah, no way that they'll move from the line, as they are the ones who think the rules don't apply to them!

ooooo...I want to say something SOOO bad! I have never gone thru an express with someone in front with a TON of groceries, but with definately more than 10. I count mine. I am guilty of going thru with 11 or 12, but no more than that. Usually i don't even go thru an express UNLESS i have only 2 or 3 items, tho. I am also the type of person who will tell people to go in front of me if i have like 25 items and they ahve a gallon of milk, i will tell them to go in front of me in a regular line. most times at my local grocery, they don't even have the express open. people have no respect anymore.

here in the philippines, the main shopping malls' grocery departments don't allow this. they always have managers standing up along cashiers' areas. they tell people who bring along big carts to not get inline in the baskets' areas. they are told in a nice way and people won't argue about it. there are lines for baskets only and for carts and for senior citizens. i hope that other grocery stores do that. atleast be able to have someone from the store to tell people on where to line and so on so everything will be in properly done.

I wish it was that way here in teh United States. That is nice that the managers keep basket lines seperate from cart lines. It is especially nice that you are so thoughtful toward your senior citizens!

That would irritate me, but I very seldom buy ten items or less so I haven't experienced that one much. I have been irritated when a 10 items or less cashier is idle and still won't ring you up. I don't think that there should be a line of people with full buggies there, but if the cashier is doing NOTHING then I think it is far nicer for him/her to offer to ring up one other customer at a time.

I never got irritated due to the $10 checked out condition. I think the minimum $10 can be achieved very easily within a month if you are a regular on the website and you post quality content. I am here for over three months and every month I have made more than $10 without much of a worry and I think it applies to other members also. If you are not giving a certain amount of profit to my lot then how can you expect the same from them. money is not what you get through charity. We have to work hard for it and that implies on this site also.

When I was in college, I worked in a pharmacy part-time to pay for my car and other expenses. What we did there was that the express checkout was a tiny counter, only enough room to put up a few items. If someone came up with a cart full, we were told to tell them (politely, of course), "I'm sorry but, as you can see, this checkout cannot accommodate the number of items you have in your cart" and then we directed them to the nearest regular checkout. We were told by the owner/manager that he did NOT want to see us accepting a few items at a time on the counter, until a full cart was emptied. If a customer tried to take it out on us, he was to be called and he came down and dealt with them directly. He wasn't the easiest guy to work for, at times, but for that policy he really helped us.

That is really a great idea and could be adapted in a larger store. Simply make the express and/or 10 items or less aisle small so as to not accomodate a large cart! Sounds like your boss, although difficult at times, was into people following the rules.

grrrrrrrrrrrrr that bugs me! People these days just seem to be SERIOUSLY lacking manners!!! Another thing that bugs me is people trying to surreptitiously edge their way in front of me in a queue. I normally don't let them. I say 'excuse me, please don't try to push ahead of me.' and I take my place ahead of them again. I know it's petty, but I just cannot stand that behaviour! But if someone actually is in a hurry and asks me if they can go ahead, then no problem. And if they have much less to check out than me I'll generally tell them to go ahead.

I've been known to out loud count the items in the other persons cart and wonder alound so that person can hear "Must be that new Math to make a cart full of items into 10...Oh I get it, food, 1 item this one is under the 10 item limit afterall" And when they tell me to fu_k off I usually ask if thier mother's were pround of job they did teaching you your manners. Only came close to a fight once doing that

No I've never really had that happen. People here are pretty good about reading the sign. But I can see how irritating that would be! I probably would say something to them, like, "Excuse me this line is for people with 10 items or less." It may sound rude but they're being rude by disrespecting the people who could get out quicker. And not following rules. So that's my advice. Otherwise the store employee should kindly say something to them.

there seems to be a rule at the express check out they are as follows, never have your money ready, ask for some one to do a price check on an 79 cent item. request some one bring a bag of chips to the front check out, get your order rung through, then look for your store points card, it is in there some where, discuss you holiday with the cashier. complain about store policy in a big loud voice so that customer service is brought in to the frey.I swear my first marriage didn't last as long as an express line in my grocery store

Grocery Shopping - Short or Long Lines
Yes but I don't say anything because I've done it to one or two times. It happens. If that line seems longer I look for another line. If I'm in real big hurry and there is someone in front of me with a cart full I ask if I can get in front of them and haven't had any problems yet.
• United States
26 Jan 07
Yeah, I don't say anything either. However, I am usually thinking it! Ha! You are very asertive (which I admire) I can't bring myself to ask someone if I can go in front of them when I have only an item or two and they have a cartful. I usually stand there hoping that they will notice and volunteer to let me go ahead of them! I do voluntarily tell people to go in front of me if they have only a few items and I have a cartful.

I don't like it. I think it is the height of bad manners to even try to do it, and I won't. If you are in that much of a rush, you should have left sooner. I have also seen people try to slide into a line with a full cart. I usually won't say anything, but sometimes I will when I see them trying to be sneaky about it. Like sliding in front of someone they know and saying something like, "You don't mind do you?" GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I think that is what fluffleshark is talking about in the post above. The lengths to which people will go trying to be sly about moving into line!

This is another one of my pet peeves ( I have many ). I can see if they stretch it to maybe 15 items, but when it is a blatant abuse I think that the cashier should be able to direct them to another line before they start unloading their cart. Of course this isn't realistic, actually, because chances are that the cashier will not even notice until she checks the person out. I often wonder why cashiers do not politely say something to people who do this; maybe they should point it out in a non-offensive way after the checkout is complete. This would likely embarrass the customer, maybe causing him/her to think twice the next time. I hate it when people think that the rules do not apply to them.

It's funny to find this discussion now. I just got back from Wal-Mart and there was a person in front of me in the 10 items or less line with enough groceries in their cart for a year (I actually had to ask if there was some sort of national emergency declared that I didn't know about). I think the cashiers have to get a little more vocal when people are this clearly flaunting the rules.

Ahh This drives me crazy when it happens to me!!! Can these people not clearly see the sign says TEN items or less? Why do they feel they have the right to go through with more than that? Oh this is definitely a pet peeve of mine. I can't understand how people can be so inconsiderate of others.

maybe cause no one else was in line till then...hey some people can't count. LOL-But yes, it's annoying espically when there's a cart with obvious 25 items or more...and they get away with just because it's small items. some people will do anything to get ahead!
