Tips: How to crochet for starters

I am new with this hobby because I am use to crosstitching. I like it because you don't need to change a lot of colors unlike crosstitching. But there are things that I don't know, especially the basic ones. A friend taught me how to crochet a belt and that is the only thing that I have made. I like to make a cap or a vest, can anybody share the basics or just refer me to a good site where I can get tips?

I think you'll find this is a hobby that will give you a lot of enjoyment, but, as with all things worth having, your skill will come with practice. Find a book with the basic stitches and keep beside you with a simple scarf or afghan pattern, and, as you're stuck on a term, you can refer to the book. Ask around and I'm sure you'll find a friend or member of your family that can help you from time to time if you're stuck with something. I've been doing this for so many years and I'm working on writing a pattern. It's a very slow process and it's taking longer than I thought it would, but I'm quite pleased with it so far. I do all my crocheting for dolls, mostly the new reborns.

Visit your local yarn store and see if they have a crochet club you can join. Learning from books and websites has its limits. Many Michael's, Joanne's and Hancock fabric stores have knitting or crochet classes too. Nothing beats a real life person when you get stuck in the middle of a project. Make it a habit of doing your crafts in public too, and others of similar interests seem to come out of the woodwork.

My first project was an afghan, then scarves. I have been wanting to take on a vest myself but the patterns are all so diffuclt to follow. I am interested in any sites that have free patterns. Good luck on your crocheting venture

There are also patterns that you can crochet and then crossstitch a pattern onto the crocheted item. I have not tried that yet but would think for a cross sticher you would find that a challenge after you get used to crochet

I have not mastered caps or vests but it would be easy for you to make an afghan. You could make it just like the belt only bigger. When you are bored with one color, tie on a new one and keep crocheting. Go all around the outside with a contrasting color to form a border and you are done!

You might look on the web for instructions and free patterns. That's what I did. Just put crochet stitches in the search window of your search engine and see what you get. I found some really useful sites.

Afghans are pretty easy. You can find alot of patterns online or you can go to a craft store and buy some books. I know there is a book called LEARN TO CROCHET. I use to have one, if I can find it I will be happy to send it to you.
