Are Children Really Innocent?

We all love to think about our kids as innocent creatures capable of doing no harm to the world. But is this really true? If they are left in very bad living conditions, will they not become hateful to the world? Have you read Lord of the Flies by William Golding? What do you think about it?

I think some kids are just naturally mean. I've seen kids that reminded me of this. I even have a friend that when I met her five year old son for the first time, he struck me as evil. And I actually said to her that I was worried he'd someday be a serial killer. Her reply was that I was not the only one that said that.

I have seen and been around children who are like this as well. I have never said this to anyone, but I have had mothers tell me that their children are mean and they feel that one day they will end up doing something bad. This is actually quite scary to think that a mother would actually think that their children could end up doing something really bad one day.

That's quite interesting. I am surprised that your friend has accepted this fact. usually mothers don't. All kids can be mean, I guess, the moment they lose their comfort zone. In some cases, we simply fail to realise their comfort zones and it becomes evident how mean the child is.

Yes I have read "Lord of the Flies" - great book, and very scary too. I think all children are born innocent, but their environment has a great effect on them from a very early age - wasn't it the Jesuits who said "Give me the boy before he is 7 and I will give you the man". Certainly if a child is bought up in a harsh environment and a witness to curuel and hateful, things - even subjected to abuse themselves, they will become old before their time.

Thanks for the response. I guess we can 'catch them young' for anything! I am really disturbed by childhood gets exploited in many cases. Try to see a documentary called Children of Leningradsky, if possible. Get details here http://www.childrenofleningradsky.com/

I disagree with you. I have met many people who have grown up in a negative environment and/or who have been abused, and they have grown to become extremely nice, polite, friendly and warm individuals, as well as being extremely smart and successful. I think that it just depends on that child's personality type. A child could grow up in a nice neighborhood with parents who have paid attention to them, as well as having taught them right from wrong, and they could become mean, cruel and hateful once they grow up. This is the reason why I say that I think that it depends on their personality type.

All children start out as innocent as can be. Whether child or adult, you learn and react to your surroundings. So yes, if put in the right atmosphere, your child can become the devil child and raise all types of cain. No, I have not read Lord of the Flies, what is the novel about?

I feel that children are innately innocent. But as they grow older their surroundings affect them.Have you heard about The Four Faces of Women? It talks about the phases a person undergoes. Do research it in the internet. It is being initiated by Brahma Kumaris(www.bkwsu.org)

Some children though go through horrendous situations and are not turned for want of a better word. They manage to keep their good natures. Normally I would say children are innocent however they have shown that some just aren't that way. If you have ever read or seen a movie based off "The Bad Seed" it talks about how some kids are just born bad. They have something wrong internally with them. I don't like to think that is possible but you do have to wonder at times. I don't think there is any easy or pat answer for this question. We can only hope that children will always be good by nature and that we do not mess them up too much.

Good observation. Let's just be optimistic, though we can't foresee what nature instills in us.

yes they are innocent and sometimes ignorant of a lot of things happening around us that is why it is the parents responsibility to teach and guide them through as they grow up otherwise there is a very good chance that they will learn it from someone and more often than not they learn the wrong way. and when you try to correct them they will resent you, so it is adamant that parents should get involved with the learning process of their kids.
